The dream for playing in Syria?s national team is being pursued by the Assyrian player Louay Chanko. One time Syrianska player is off with an injured foot and can is forced go home from the national team camp.

When opportunities to play for the Swedish national team vanished Louay ?Lolo? Chanko took the opportunity to play football for another national team ? in the country where he has his roots. He decided himself to leave Hammarby and went to Syria in order to try to play himself a place in the Syrian football national team.

But now he has to wait for the injured foot to heal. According to Swedish News Agency he has been forced to rehabilitation training for the entire week and then can train with a Syrian club if the foot holds.

But, I will not risk anything, Chanko says. When I came down I knew I was injured, I will be sensible and will play only when I am 100%, not 60, he says.

Chanko is not the only Assyrian player from S?dert?lja in the national team camp in Syria. Also Assyriska's middle Defense Elias Merkes is in the camp.

When will Iraq wake up since they don't even have one Assyrian player. Way to go Syria.

WOW this great. It is amazing, Assyrian players in Iraq have been part of Iraqi teams since the 50s, while Assyrians in Syria have just started this. But we have to take into account the population and interest in soccer in the two countries.

ASHOOR

It is a smart move by Syria. Iraq has just gone too Islamic for my taste. I bet there are still great Assyrian players in Iraq right now but they are not being picked. One wonders why.

Our people in Europe (especially Sweden) are just amazing.

for sure there are plenty, but they rather let the muslims play...probably "allah" will help them to conquer the Western Cup..... :giggle:

i think there were more assyrian players for syria. christians but maybe they would have called themselves arabs.

btw other messages on other forums are negative. people think its bad to play for the syrian ARAB republic....  i hope they will wear some assyrian signs ( not just a cross). iraqi assyrians players should go to sweden and play for assyriska!!!! more assyrians in the team is better.
