I would like to talk about something that many of you may have already known about but I am only started to discover during this WC, or at least it became more clear to me now.
Basically, this World Cup was like a proxy war between Real Madrid fans (CR7 is the greatest) and Barcelona fans (Messi is the greatest)
As I read Twitter and FB posts and comments last few weeks, and more specifically last 24 hrs, I noticed for a lot of people everything is seen from the lens of which of the two teams they support. Examples:
-notable Real Madrid fan pages posting about Argentina’s 3rd goal by MESSI, showing it shouldn’t have counted because two of Argentina’s reserve players had entered the field.
-A FIFA Twitter account claiming the GOAT debate to be settled after tomorrow, and most of the replies were Madrid/CR7 fans claiming that the whole thing was rigged by FIFA in favour of Messi and that this tweet showed their true colours.
-Barca fans and pages using the victory yesterday to claim that Messi is the best out there and that CR7 would dream of reaching the final, never mind winning it.
-Barca fans on my FB feed always indirectly attacking Real fans in their celebration posts in last 24 hrs.
And so many other examples that I can’t go over each one now.
While I knew the rivalry between the two clubs was so fierce, didn’t know it had spilled into the World Cup and turned into a proxy war.
Basically; assuming you are not from France/Argentina/Portugal, you could have probably guessed which team people supported yesterday just based on whether they like CR7 or Messi.
Seems like these players have caused more damage soccer than benefits. Yes I am sure they have gotten millions of kids to grow up liking soccer last 10 years but the toxic non-neutrality is too much at times.
