Back in 2014/2015, I wrote extensively about the rift within the Chaldean church, between its patriarch at its Baghdad HQ and those in San Diego.
Well, as that dispute seems to have gone quiet of late, there is a much hotter one brewing of late: that between HH Mar Luis Sako (patriarch of the Chaldean Catholic Church) and Rayan Al-Kaldani, the head of the 'Babelyoun' political movement and whose members have 3 representatives in the Iraqi parliament. The movement also happens to be an ally of the Shi'tte factions in Iraq.
What is this rift about? the political movement represented by Mr.Kaldani accuses HH Luis Sako of taking over Christian properties and selling them without authority. The latter denies this of course and accuses the former of fabricating these lies. In fact, the rift goes even older than that, when the patriarch objected to people calling Mr. Kaldani 'Sheikh' (Arabic reference to someone with authority or mastery etc, something neither Assyrians nor Chaldeans have and is more of an Arab/Muslim thing)
To make matters worse, Cardinal Louis Sako, announced that he is withdrawing from his seat in Baghdad after Iraqi President Abdul Rashid revoked a decree recognising him as head of the Christian Church in Iraq. The former has been saying in Arbil for the last 3 weeks and intends to continue doing so until this decree is reversed and HH has authority officially restored.
