Following last week's shocking and sad news about HH. Mar Emmanuel resigning from his bishop duties, presiding over the Diocese of Canada, there was a delegation from the Assyrian Church visiting Canada to look into things and prepare for the transition until a new bishop is put into place. Represented by Mar Meelis Zaia, Metropolitan of Australia, New Zealand, and Lebanon, and accompanying him was Mar Benyamin Elya, Bishop of Victoria & New Zealand, the church delegation presided over mass in the Assyrian church in Toronto, Canada.
While I wasn't able to attend due to some personal commitments, luckily the event (mass, speech) was broadcast live on Facebook and available for anyone to view later.
As I listened to his speech, it hit me: is Mar Meelis Zaya the most underrated Assyrian leader? And I'm not just referring to his role as a religious leader; I'm considering leadership in any capacity. His speech was truly captivating, making you appreciate his work and history in service to both the church and the nation as a whole. It's thanks to individuals like him that our church remains strong and thriving, despite all it has faced in recent times.
Our nation and people don't lack in faith or religious affiliation. What they lack at times, which is why I appreciate his holiness great speech, is national pride and identity. One thing he stressed over is how some of our own Assyrians not only don't come to church but criticize what goes on there. He further touches on the topic of our own people going to other churches instead of sticking with their native church.
