Hello Brothers & Sisters in Christ.... New Age groups have often spoken against the Holy spirit and provided what they think is evidence to Show and prove that the Holy Spirit is a mere Force only, nothing more to it. In their Argument, they brought up the Following Points:
1- The Holy Spirit Does not have a Specific Name, therefore it can not be a person but rather a Force
In response to the above, Spiritual beings are not always named in Scripture. For example, Evil spirits are rarely named but rather are identified by their particular Character ( ie-Unclean, Wicked and so forth ). In the same way, the Holy Spirit is identified by his Primary Character-which is Holiness. I must also point out that the Holy spirit is in fact related to the name of the other persons of the Trinity in Matthew 28:19 " Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit".
2- The Holy Spirit Fills many people at the same time, therefore it can not be a Person but rather a Force ( Acts 2:4 )
In Ephesians 3:19, We Witness God filling all the Ephasian believers. Like wise, Ephasians 4:10 Speaks of Christ filling all things & Ephasians 1:23 Speaks of Christ as the one who fills all in all. The Fact that God and Christ can fill all things does not mean that the Father & Jesus are not Persons. In the same way, the Holy spirit can fill many people at once but it does not prove that he is not a Person.
So then, What biblical evidence exists to prove that the Holy Spirit is a person or a Qnuma as better Described?
A person has a Personality. There are Three Primary attributes to a Personality. They are Mind, Emotions & will. A Force does not have these Attributes.
* The Holy spirit has a mind:
The Holy Spirit 's Intellect is seen in the book of Corinthians.
1 Cor 2:10 " The Spirit Searches all things, even the deep things of God. ". We are also told in 1 Cor 2:11 that the Holy Spirit knows the thoughts of God. How can a spirit know the thoughts of God if it did not have a mind? A force does not know things.
Romans 8:27 Tells us that just as The Holy Spirit knows the things of God, so God the father knows what the mind of the Spirit is.
* The Holy Spirit has Emotions:
In Ephasians 4:30, we read " Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God ". Grief is an emotion and is not something that can be experienced by a Force. The Holy Spirit feels the emotion of grief when believers Sin.
* The Holy Spirit has a will:
In 1 Cor 12:11, it reads " The Holy Spirit distributes spiritual gifts to each one indiviually just as he wills. ". The Holy Spirit makes a sovereign choice regarding what spiritual gifts each christian recieves. A Force does not have such a Will.
* The Holy Spirit's Works confirm his Personality:
Besides the three Attributes mentioned, The Holy Spirit is seen doing many things in Scripture that only a Person can do. For example:
* The Holy Spirit Teaches Believers ( John 14:26)
* The Holy Spirit testifies ( John 15:26 )
* The holy spirit Guides believers ( Romans 8:14 )
* The Holy Spirit commissions people to service ( Acts 13:4 )
* The Holy Spirit issues commands to believers ( Acts 8:29 )
*The Holy Spirit Restrains Sin ( 2 Thessalonians 2:7 )
* The Holy Spirit intercedes for believers ( Romans 8:26 )
* The holy Spirit Speaks to people ( John 15:26, 2 Peter 1:21 )
