So 2 of my younger cuzins..think it's ok to speak only in English to their parents. And while they're speaking to their parents, I can tell the parents aren't getting them. And yet, the kids still insist on speaking english to their parents. Dont get me wrong, including a little english in your surat, is okay...we all do that, but come on, just completely and purposefully refusing to speak your native tongue is very wrong!!!!!!! I'm so sad and ashamed to say I have 2 whitewashed cousins who are embarassed of their culture, I don't get it! Why would u be embarassed??? Anyways, what do u guys think? Is it right that they are only speaking in English to their parents? Some people say I'm too hard on them. :blink:

U know what? I do speak english to my parents and they answer soureth back to me...I grew up while my older sisters speaking english to me and i picked up from them ever since..To be honest i do feel like crap when i don't speak my language, and i'm not embarassed at all of my own language..

You reminded me of the times my Dad used to tell me off for answering him in English. Then I'd say, "Sorry i forgot"... he would get more angery. :lol:
Wuvy I don't think it is wrong for those who already know the language to speak English, especialy those who come now to these countries, they need to learn good english so they can survive!

How do you know they are refusing? maybe the parents are trying to learn some english from their childern? and thats why they havent responded to their childern's action or so.
I actually don't like to speak sorath, so I refused to learn it in the first place but that doesn't mean I dislike my culture or not appreciate it, not at all. I am very proud of where I came from. However, I do have a second language that I know and adore.
P.s. I do have some kind of love for the sorath/assyrian/chaldean songs... they just keep me going. lol

Thats too bad mgh...but kids arent at fault here...its the parents...they let it get to that point.
I think we spoke our language in school because we were trying to show off...lol i know alot of times i was doing it just to tick them off...they hated it but my friends and i loooooooooved it lol...everyone knew christians were alot cooler than muslims...and wat better way to prove it then to speak sureth? :mrgreen: ok that was a joke but honestly....i think back home kids didnt pick on us for speaking another language...but here...unfortunatly kids make fun of them so they have that mentality that speaking english is cooler and they get used to it and also speak it at home....and again thats when parents should step in and stop their kids from speaking any other language besides sureth at home...

If we didn't didn't speak assyrian at home when we were younger we would get a beat down my my dad..never actually beat us but we were scared every time he yelled NOOO ENGLISH SOURETH SOURETH!!!!!
Around my mom we spoke english because she never yelled or scared us..my poor mom. Now that we are older we speak english/assyrian and they don't mind but if we say something in english they don't understand we say it in assyrian.

if i ever have kids, the first thing i'll speak to them is soureth i mean they can learn english from watching those kids tv shows or whatever.... but other then that i will def speak soureth with them...NO ENGLISH!!!..
my sister in law's daughter whose 2 and a half yrs old speaks soureth better then me or her parents, she also speaks english but does not do it she knows her parents will yell at her...
