when u ask yourself wether or not you are proud to be Assyrian...
just what exactly are you proud of?

I mean we do have quite the history. but you cant take credit for what your ancestors did a million years ago. and even so...would u really be proud or a series of events that left your culture countryless?

what do we have now to be proud of? for every 1 assyrian that is doing something with his life there are 7098098 others wasting away at donut shop parkinglots with nothing but lint in their pockets.
im not proud of that

so what can i sayi am proud of?

i mean having a language and no country is kinda like being a hockey player with no league to play in. what good is that?

the only thing i can cunjur up is the fact we have a language that has survived up until now. but thats it???????????

why are you proud to be assyrian ?

Your missing all the contributions to mankind we have made; dividing the circle into 360 degrees, early mathematics, medicine, etc. And the Arabs would be NOWHERE if it hadn't been for us. We translated Greek and Assyrian philosophy, theology, etc. for them to know what the world was about; and now they treat us like crap back in Iraq. The world should be thanking and remebering the Assyrians like they do the Greeks and Romans. And don't worry Bagh, we will have our country back soon enough, Iraq is changing and probably for the better.

Oh yeah, I LOVE your signature .gif LOL. When I first saw him dance in the movie Kickboxer, it was the funniest thing ever.

Being proud of your ancestor's accomplishments isn't taking credit for what they did. They're two totally different things. Just because someone says "We did this..." doesn't literally mean that they take credit for it. That's like saying a living American takes credit for the formation of the United States. They don't, but they're probably proud of the founding fathers which, I think we can all agree, is perfectly fine.

That only applies if you're proud of your ancestor's military conquests. I don't think Assyria was invaded in 612 BCE because of advances in science and such...

Let me ask you this: would you question a Native American's pride in his/her people when you consider the overwhelmingly high rates of alcoholism, drug use, suicides, etc.? Sure there are some Assyrians who do nothing but waste time in coffee shop parking lots, but if they had a proper education as well as a good command of English, do you think they still would? It's not always their fault, it's coming to a foreign country.

Last time I checked, not every spoken language is the official language of a country nor do languages exist for the sole purpose of being recognized by a country. Your analogy sucks.

Well, the language that has survived up until now is pretty significant. I would also argue that we as a whole surviving up until now through Persian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, British, and Iraqi/Iranian/Turkish/Syrian influence is pretty amazing. I don't think this is said nearly enough, but our ancestors keeping their Christian faith under ~1400 years of Muslim rule while 1 billion+ others converted I think is nothing short of mind-bogglingly incredible.

Plus you also have things we did under no empire, such as spreading Christianity as far as China (and possibly Korea/Japan so I've heard), translating Greek and Roman manuscripts into Syriac, which were then translated into Arabic, which then were then translated in Europe and thus sparking the Renaissance. Quit being a pessimist, man.

To be Assyrian means:

-being a direct descendent of a very advanced civilization that invented many things in different fields when many other races were just nomads!
-having one of the earliest empires in history
-being one of the most ancient ethnicities still in existence today after surviving hundreds of persecutions
-keeping our language
-one of the earliest people to embrace christianity, spread it far east and survive wave after wave of islamic persecussion
-and one of the best, whenever a Jew bothers you know that were the reason 10 tribes of Israel were lost!

I'm proud because my ancestors have managed to survive and keep our culture & language alive for thousands of years, they've been persecuted, tortured, forced to flee from one country to another, and yet they still maintained their identity.

One normally should appreciate his uniqueness, but when that has been achieved through a lot of pain & suffering, then one indeed should be much more proud that such an ancient culture has survived to get to him and for him to pass it on to his children, and so forth.

The fact that some Assyrians aren't doing much with their lives have nothing to do with you being proud of who you are, you're not supposed to measure your pride by other people's successes. Pride is a personal thing, you either appreciate what & who you are or you don't, regardless of who does what in your community. You determine how you feel and how you live your life, you don't wait for others to behave in a certain way for you to decide how you'll feel.

OK before.. i used to be proud to be assyrian because of all the accomplishments our ancestors acheived, then i was proud because we were the first civilization, lost everything and still maintained our culture.

Most recently, I am proud to be Assyrian for the sole reason that we spread Christianity and we are still surviving today and maintained the language of Christ. Whereas other christian groups such as the Phoenicians and the Coptics have lost their ancestral language.

One thing i truly wish for, is that assyrians start educating themselves. Why arent we producing the next mozart, einstein, or even more common careers like doctors, dentists, pharmacists, lawyers, research scientists? Out of 30 000 students at my university, there are only 4 assyrians  it boggles my mind sometimes.

If you didnt get the chance to educate yourself, please encourage your children to do so. My point isnt directed towards elitism but the lasting values you get from going through rigorous studies. You learn to be an educated citizen, understand teh world around you in multiple perspectives, be a critical thinker and work towards a challenging goal.

OUFF im done venting LOL :angel2:

Why do people always ask why we are proud to be Assyrians? And why do people always see the bad things in our community, those things are every where...

I am very proud to be an Assyrian.
I live in an area where there are no Assyrians, mostly dutch people .... and I really notice how beautiful our culture is compared to other cultures

I am proud because assyrians respect and love their family
I am proud that even my far family is still family.
I am proud that I have cousins aunts and uncle who aren't my real cousins aunts and uncles but they love and care about me like they are.
I am proud that we still hold on to our culture even though we live in countries where the people are so different from us.
I am proud that if we have something to celebrate we really celebrate it very huge.
I am proud that we have so many nice parties.
I am proud to see our people dancing our beautiful dances like the khigga sheikani etc at our parties.
I am proud because everytime I am with my dutch friends and we meet assyrians they are suprised how open and warm our people are.
I am proud that we have a culture which is a mix between the middle eastern and european culture.
I am proud that all the assyrians girls think they are gorgeous because their family and parents always tell them that.
I am proud that the our men are still real men which must be very difficult in a world where the man slowly are turning into women. Our men are hairy know how to protect a women and still think that they should earn more money than women which makes it possible for us to work partime instead of full time :giggle:
I think we have a nice balance... We aren't that strict as the muslims are and have a lot of freedom, but we aren't that cold and egoistic as the western people and still have respect and rules which make our culture very special

Uffht and I haven't even named our language, history, religion and food

thats what im proud of too. when i talk to other assyrians about things we do...all the silly stuff that made us embarrassed as kids and others can relate to, like the school lunches, it makes me smile. ya it was embarrassing at one time but we held true to who we were. its a silly example but its what makes me smile and makes me happy to be an assyrian :bigarmhug:

amen to that..

There is really not much to be proud of at all, just a hype that we grew up with, sure our ancestors contributed to civilization, but that is like a needle in a haystack

How come 90% of assyrian youths today just drop out of highschool or barely finish highschool and then get jobs or become bums?

Maybe this is the problem.........
