During the announcement of obituaries at church today, one passing in particular captured everyone’s attention. A 103-year-old Assyrian woman — likely the oldest living Assyrian in our community — has passed away at the age of 103, in Dohuk , Iraq.

Born in 1922, she lived through one of the darkest chapters of our modern history. As an 11-year-old child, she survived the Semele massacre — a tragedy that forever marked the Assyrian people. With her passing, we may have lost one of the last living eyewitnesses to that horrific event.

May her memory be eternal. And may we continue to honor those who endured so much, by preserving our history, our identity, and our faith for generations to come.
