Political groups with foreign backing

What would you do if you found out an independent Assyrian group you love dearly and respect for their work were actually funded by Kurdish money?

Is it ok for Assyrian political groups to be funded by Kurds?  Can they ever really be independent?  Can they - being fed by Kurdish nationalists - be efficient in pursuing independent Assyrian rights?

It is all about what their purpose and agenda from this funding is?

Whether it is Zowaa, Atranaye, Betnahrain or anyone: if they are funded by an outsider, and they know this funding is a way to manipulate our internal affairs, then I am against such funding.

Problem is, you hardly find a country or side funding someone else without having some interests in it.

They would no longer be "independent".  Taking foreign money is okay for aid, but the Kurdish-Assyrian issue is political in nature, not humanitarian:  taking their money likely means there are strings attached in terms of our land, ethnic, and civil rights.  The Assyrian group would never really be free of what the Kurds wanted them to do - they are the ones providing the resources, after all.  We have seen it with the recent money being cut from those who support the ADM, the firing of people attending events sponsored by the ADM, and their fierce opposition to the police force in the Nineveh Plains, displacing the Peshmerga.

If the money was "no strings attached" and purely for our own use in our own way, then yes, take it.  But Kurdish parties - or any other nationalist groups seeking to neutralize other groups which present political problems to them - will not give money without ensuring they are buying loyalty or at least silence from Assyrians.  They would be stupid to do otherwise.  And they have hired too many consultants to be stupid.

Waleeta, your second paragraph is what I believe in it too. It is all about the strings attached to the funding.

I believe our money should come from the following only:

-Iraqi government, since we have a share of the revenue that the government gets
-Our own Assyrian people
-Any money allocated by the UN and other internationally recognized agencies.

Sweden, Stockholm (AINA) -- One of the representatives of the Popular Council of the Chaldean Syriac Assyrians - an Iraqi-based Assyrian organization (and Aghajan's organization) - acknowledged yesterday his organization receives Kurdish funding.

The acknowledgment, made by the organizations representative in Europe, Mr. Gibrael Marko, was aired today on the 24 July by radio Qolo, a radio program for the Assyrian community in Sweden. Marko reluctantly admitted during the radio interview that his organization, which was set up in 2007, receives regular funding from Kurdish sources, thus confirming the suspicions of other Assyrian political groups.

According to the publicly made aims of the Popular Council of the Chaldean Syriac Assyrians, the organization seeks to expand the Kurdish area to include Assyrian lands in the Nineveh plains. The group muscled great economic resources despite its fairly recent establishment and has been distributing food and other aid to Assyrian families who are encouraged to support the goals of the organization.
