Philosophy help....

I'm almost done writing my essay on Freud and Sartre, but I need someone to reply back letting me know if he/she understands my point.

A quick religious background on Sartre, he does not believe in God and he believes that man existed and created himself though his choices.

His quote ??there is at least one being in whom existence precedes essence, a being who exists before he can be defined by any concept, and that being is man.?

His second quote ??Only afterward will he be something, and he himself will have made what he will be. Thus, there is no human nature, since there is no God to conceive it.?

I disagree with his philosophical view and this is what I wrote...

Sartre?s idea of God raises the question ?How did an individual come into existence before he/she created himself/herself through his/her choices?? For example, a man exists and made the choice to teach philosophy; therefore, he now identifies himself as a philosophy teacher; however, what infinite substance created this man before he was able to create himself through his choice?

Does that make any sense at all? I have been reading it over and correcting it and I now have reached a point where I am doubting if I make sense.

JooJee, focus on the question honey....FOCUS!!!!!! lol :p

:bangin:

Ludikristen, Sartre is an Atheist and he says there is no God. He also says that man exists first then he creates himself through the choices he makes.

Now I am asking, "Who created this man that allows him to create himself through his choices?"

So Sartre is saying there is no God and I am saying if there is no God, then how was man created?

Do your arguments against Sartre need to be wholly secular? Because to me, the argument you have presented there is a theological one.

Oh and.. if you are venturing into the realm of theology, you might want to replace 'infinite substance' with something less akin to Leibniz. Something more like 'divine being', 'supreme being', 'the bestower of potential'.

You can even phrase is thus: 'What gave man the ability to create himself? What gave man the potential for creation'. The argument against Sartre's 'existence precedes essence' can also be said to be what precedes existence? This question is something not answered. I could go on all day.. but I need a donut.. brb..

I don't really know if I get this philosophy stuff, but I see people's physical existence and who they become through the choices they make as 2 different things. So, what you're arguing is that you agree that people's choices lead to their identity, but that there must be something that created them physically first?

My head hurts.

Akin to Leibinz?......Uhhh......Ha? One philosophy term at a time please!

We have used the term 'infinte substance' in our course so it's fine.

Yes, Ludikristen, you are correct (I feel like I am playing 'Who Wants To Be An Assyros Thousandaire?' :giggle: btw, a reminder that Candy Shop is the next player) ok back to philosophy, you thought about that for probably 10-15 minutes now try sitting in a philosophy class for three hours listening to this!! Shoodineeeh!! OHHH and my beautiful test, 6/20 lmfao! Brutal! Stupid Decartes, he needs a hobby!! Son of a :censored: I'm going to fail the course because he wrote such a boring book kfjhdskjfhdkj......ahhhh feel much better
