The Washington Capitals sent a mesage to their leading scorer Monday night, benching rookie sensation Alexander Ovechkin for more than 14 minutes in a 4-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens.
According to a report in the Washington Times, the Capitals took the action because Ovechkin had not been following team policies regarding length of shifts and defensive zone coerage.
The paper indicated that two events Monday night forced the Capitals to discipline their best player. With the Capitals killing a penalty midway through the second period, Ovechkin left the defensive zone apparently waiting for a breakaway pass and leaving the Caps to face a 5-on-3 disadvantage in their own end. Furthermore, Ovechkin allegedly ignored an order to come off the ice on a power play.
As a result, coach Glen Hanlon benched Ovechkin for the final three minutes of the second period and the first 11 minutes of the third period in order to make a point with the talented rookie.
