Shlama/Shlomo,

I thought that we could share words that are not really used anymore because of other loan words with each other in this thread. Once I asked my grandfather how to say "restaurant" in Assyrian but he couldn't remember the word instantly so he called me back a few days later and said loqenta!  :biggrin:

Restaurant = Loqenta



Mataam is Arabic!

I've heard that spay is not Assyrian, but I don't remember where I read it, and that we should use tawa instead.  :jawdrop:

cellphone and telephone are BS. They have too many consonants to count as a single noun.

Yes, they're too long. Somebody should shorten them (without affecting the meaning of the word). Or we can perhaps use elision on them.

there's a newer word called "qa'aya -> http://www.assyrianlanguages.org/sureth/dosearch.php?searchkey=32775&language=id
it's from the classical Syriac root "to cry out, to sound" which is the same meaning as "qraya"

good thing we have synonymous roots :)

Cellphone is literally the same word but with eeda. Why not call it "Qa'ayonah?" (little phone)?

Or just "qaryana"? But this will sound like "the reader" or something. Lol.

Qaya is good for both telephones and mobile phones to me though.

"the reader" is "qaroya" which I use at the conclusion page of my book :)

qa'aya might probably be compacted in meaning to refer to telephones and mobile phones in general so you're definitely progressive on that issue.

Speaking of phone, what the hell is "number" in Assyrian? We say "ruqqim" (which is an Arabic word).

heewee is also a word in Sureth, it means "my pickaxe" lol.
heewa (spelled Heeva in written) means pickaxe.
