Brace yourself as some may not like or even believe that this is about to happen….
So I have always believed that in the heat of the moment and the bitter feeling of getting eliminated from the World Cup, players and coaches can say a lot of things that they either don’t mean or come to regret later.
Immediately following the defeat on Sunday, I read a lot of posts and reports about this being Neymar’s last World Cup and that he is done; believe some came from him directly? But I thought hold on a second , we have heard these things before from other players (Messi rings a bell?) that they are done and gave it their all but didn’t work out etc. But in the back of my mind I thought nothing is concrete or finalized and as long as he keeps in shape, he will somehow sneak his way into or convince the coach that he is good enough.
Well, barely 24-48 later, I am already reading and hearing that we may not have heard the last of Neymar with the NT . In fact I even read about his own dad urging him to keep going. I can’t forecast the future, but here’s what I see happening with Neymar, as much as we wanted this chapter to be done with: he will either stay with Santos to get his fitness and form back fully or move to MLS for more play time and an easier environment. He will then likely try to make his way into the squad for one last chance at a Copa America, in 2028.
And frankly, it is sad that he finishes his career without even winning this title. Then, should he somehow succeed and Brazil winks the title? You know what that means: it will help him keep his spot and transition to the 2030 World Cup, using Messi’s win in 2021 and then the WC a year later. In fact, and despite the two being a world apart in their form and fitness, his fans will point to Messi and how he won it all even older than Neymar currently is.
I hope Ancelotti can shut the door right away , so that we don’t to deal with with this whole NeyOn and NeyOff for next 4 years and as much as I would love for him to win a Copa America at least (to go with his Gold medal and Confederation Cup) , him staying until then - and should he win it - means he will stay till 2030…
