My trip to Hakkari, I neeeeed your help

Hi,

My name is Samuel, new to the forum, I am planning at trip to the Hakkari region this summer (2007) and I need your help.

1) PURPOSE of the trip is to find a Nestorian village (pre 1915) called Mar Bisho or Mar Bishnaye or the Der Mar Biosho. I will need all the information you have on it, please ask around, elders, grandfathers....

I know, from a 1910 English map that it's near modern Esendere (near the Turko-Iranian border)... but that's all I know.

2) Is there Assyrian people living in the Gawar region? in the area of Yukesova, Hakkari (city), Semdinli?

3) does anyone have a map of the villages in the Hakkari region... I mean villages, like small towns.. I need a detailed map.  Please, I already have the Assyrian villages maps, what I need it modern villages map.. kurdish villages...

If you have any advice on the trip, please tell me about it.
I know many of you know what I am talking about, I absolutely need your help.

Hi Sam,

First let me tell you that going to a place like Hakkari is not a good idea, the place is filled with PKK criminals and your only way around that region is if you hire body guards that also cannot be trusted, so it's best avoiding Hakkari.

But if you decide to go anyways here's some pointers regarding your questions:

1) Mar Bisho as a church still exists from what I heard and it's actually close to what they call today modern Esendere as you said, so try around that region.

2) No, there are no more Assyrians in Hakkari period, all the Assyrian villages are Kurdish today and you will not find Assyrians there unless you decide to go all the way east to Urmia in Iran or far west to Tur Abdin, but Hakkari itself has no Assyrians.

3) It's hard to find a detailed map of modern Hakkari but I think this is the best one out there, it's the exact region you're interested in too:

Once again I advice you not to go near that region, but if you must then Alaha minokh :)

:crybaby: man that?s so freaking sad. Better see the Assyrians in Urmia now they also have the same fate as the Assyrians that once lived in Turkey.

Tambur, I will take your advice very seriously. I thank you for the info.

I will be looking for what is left of the famous monastery there.

Indeed, sad to know that there is no more Assyrians there.

If others know anything on Mar Bisho, please do not hesitate.

I think their are a few hundred Assyrians in Hakkari region if I'm not mistaken, but they are all 80 year olds. I've seen pictures from past articles.

Have you seen the maps in David Wilmshurst's:  THE ECCLESIASTICAL ORGANISATION OF THE CHURCH OF THE EAST, 1318-1913?  In it, he shows many villages of southeastern Turkey and northwestern Iran -- including the village of Mar Beesho'.

Pre 1920 maps of the region have it on. As you can see on the map from Aina.org. I am looking for more recent map of the region, modern villages map.. kurdish villages... knwoledge of the present-day region.

nhraim, if it's possible pm me your msn name because I think I can help you with this, I have found a map and based on the map you provided I think we can locate the modern name of what used to be Mar Bisho back in the day.
