Awesom is the only way to describe it!
I went with a good friend of mine Ashour (lives near me in Scarborough). We went on Wednesday and came back Friday. We went without knowing which camp site we'd go to or what we'd do for that matter. All we knew was we're going camping/fishing/canoeing.
We get there and decide to camp at Whitefish Lake (40 km drive from the west gate enterance of the park). We stopped at Algonquin Outfitters and rented a canoe. They showed us how to put it on the car (which we forgot as soon as we stepped inside the car..lol) and we were off to our camp site.
We get there only to realize that the only way we could access our camp site (one of only 3 on the entire lake) was by canoe. We though "sure no problem we can do it".
We load up our canoe and hop in.....lol the best part of the trip no jokes!
We start paddling and we keep going zig-zag. We dont know how to go straight...lol I keep telling Ashour, paddle left to turn right and vice versa. So I'm in the front and we need to turn right, so i say paddle left...lol and the boat turns left faster. I'm like what the hell is going on. Turns out he was paddling the wrong way. Anyway, long story short, took us about 45 min to get around one corner (which at the end of the trip we did in 4 min).
We spun around one last time thankfully we were infront of a cabin where an older couple saw us in our troubles. Turns out we were sitting facing the wrong way...lol and everything about what we were doing was wrong. We pulled into his dock and he showed us exactly how to paddle and what way to face. He also helped even the weight out on our boat.
After the short lesson, we were on our way again. We turn the second corner, and I kid you not, this lake was massive! Even with this new lesson it still took us a good hour to find one of three camp sites. Eventually we found the only vacant site and decided to doc.
We had a good time over there in general. But let me tell you. Canoeing is not an easy task! The view was amazing. We went on a bunch of paths. Got stung a lot though, I'm still covered in stings.
Didn't see much wildlife though. We were going on the "wildlife trail" where you're almost guarenteed to see tonns of wildlife, big and small, but we were leaving that date and were worried we wouldn't get back intime to return the canoe.
We hiked most of the time there and canoed the rest. One particular night we ended up hiking back to our tent at 10pm. Man is it ever dark at 10PM. Stupid us we forget the flashlight as well and relied on the moon for some lighting. Freaked the heck out of Ashour...lol Though every little bush was a bear and was eventually convinced that a bullfrogs noise was in fact a bear growling.
It was a fantastic 3 days though had a blast and would definatly recommend a camping trip to anyone. If you've never been, you're definatly missing out. This is the second camping trip I went on this year and definatly not the last!
