Modern Assyrian Music
The other day I was watching a program on TV about the history of Heavy Metal music, I know what you are thinking, heavymetal, I don't like it! I don't too! but I thought it is a good opportunity to maybe understand why so many people do like it and find out about its history.
The most interesting part about that program was when they showed how heavymetal early beginnings was influenced by classical music. So it made me thinking where did western classical music come from? It came from the same source that we refer to, which is church music. So it was Church music, then classical music and then most of the modern genre of western music we hear today (not all).
The different between them and us is they had the time to develop their western church music to classical symphonic compositions, while us at one time we had great church (music) or Poetic hymns, which was flourishing in the time of "Harp of the Soul". But soon after our people were Massacred, churches and Monasteries levelled to the ground. While the western music flourished and developed, our music when back to the primitive tribal stage, back to Raweh and Zorna O Dawola.
I believe in order to have a better quality music today, we should first develop our church music into modern Assyrian classical music, and I think churches and their choirs should play a role in that, and from that reservoir our new singers can compose their modern Assyrian music. Back to the authentic roots.
The only singer who did that in my personal opinion is Shlimon Bet Shmuel with his classical compositions. Most of the other singers have gone picking up music that has nothing to do with the authentic sounds of Assyrian music and feelings, but is more like our neighbours.
We don?t have Opera, we don?t have a developed eastern or western classical music, we haven?t developed our church music, no wounder our modern Assyrian music is struggling to make a mark. The only source of income to most of our singers are weddings, no wounder we have got so many wedding singers. Sadly some of our people judge how good a singer is when he dose good job at a wedding! What a sad state of affairs. Most of our singers get their music from the lyrics writers and most lyrics writers don?t even read or write music?
