Manchester City wins first champions league and treble, but are no special team!

Manchester City have finally done it and won their first champions league title in history, and with it completed their first treble (CL, EPL and FA Cup). Even more impressive, it is Guardiola’s second treble, having previously done it with Barcelona in 2009. With this second treble and his third CL title, he deserves the consideration of best coach of all time or at least in club soccer. But to think about it, he won his first two CL titles with Barcelona when the team was loaded with stars and with a prime Messi and has not been able to win again for 12 years, across 3 different teams. But this is not taking anything away from what he has accomplished, especially winning something like 5 out of 6 EPL titles with Manchester City!

On the other hand and despite winning a treble, I don’t consider this team as one of all time great teams. Yes they had Haaland and decent players in most positions, but this is not a team you can put on the same level as Barcelona 2011 and 2015, Real Madrid in 2014 and 2018, AC Milan in 1989 etc, Bayern Munich in 2013 etc.

Do you guys agree?

They are a fantastic team and Guardiola deserves all the accolades.

But many will see this as an artificial win. Where was Manchester City 15 years ago? It was only after being bought out by one of the richest men in UAE that they became a force.

But with so many financial fair play rules being bent, with so many question marks over whether they have played by the rules off the pitch, their win will always be tainted and sport itself is the loser here.
