Statement of the Kurdish Movement and the Assyrian Organization to the public on the unfortunate incident in Derek:

Following an unfortunate quarrel on Monday 4 - 2-2007 evening, between some young Syrian and Kurds in the town of Derrick, that evolved into the murder claimed the life of the young (Joan Ahmed Mohammed) and the injury of other Kurds. It is a condemned situation, and an individual/personal crime, and not politically, religiously or nationally motivated or pushed; nor does it depart from the usual crime obtained as a result of a personal dispute or the like, in our society.

We affirm the co-existence and fraternity between all the components of the Syrian society from the Arabs, Assyrians (Syriani), and Kurds, that is instilled in history and the present, and which reflects the national fabric in this province. Maintaining this harmony is a sacred duty and a common responsibility of all.

We also condemn this direction (i.e. a similar situation) in any conduct or act in breach or violation of this life (coexistence) , and pay tribute to all sincere efforts by the clergy, politicians and national figures, which contributed by registering the issue in the framework of criminal, with cool tempers, and prevented the development of situations contexts outside the track.

At this time we console the bereaved family and friends and wish the injured a speedy recovery.  We like to reaffirm our condemnation of this crime and its likes.  We  call for the official authorities to punish the culprits and bring them to justice before the judiciary.  We consider statements issued or appeals to the contrary goes against reality and the truth of what happened

Here is another report from PUK, originally issued in PUK media:
http://www.ankawa.com/forum/index.php/topic,84026.0.html

It basically restates facts mentioned in the previous letter.

From my understanding of what happened, these guys had been pissed off for the longest time.

Remember the two Assyrians murdered by that Arab who was never prosecuted? They were also pissed off because crosses in their villages and surrounding areas were being knocked down or turned upside down. They were, as we say, "kheemeh". Their blood was boiling. And when these Kurdish idiots came and did something that pissed them off, I guess he just exploded.

I'll get more info in a few more days. I'll be down there soon enough :)
