فُرناندو دينيز قد تمت إقالته: من سيكون المدرب التالي للبرازيل؟ تحليل إحصائي لمدربين برازيليين مختلفين

Fernando Diniz has been fired by the Brazilin Football Federation, after series of losses and other dismal displays by the NT.
Various names have been floated around as possible replacements, with the latest being Dorival Júnior (Current head of coach of Sao Paulo F.C) . I also heard of Scolari name (the one who put Brazil on the map in 2002, only to make an embarrassment of the team 12 years later..._)
To put a spin on this, I did a side-by-side comparison of some of the the names being floated around. To make it more comprehensive, I include the recently fired coach, and Tite (Brazil's coach from 2016 through 2022)

Couple of things to make note of:

-This list is as of early Jan 2024 and I mainly used Wikipedia to find these managerial stats (and some other sites when needed or to double check the stats)
-For each coach, I have bolded the specific category in which they were top. For example, Tite had the best win percentage (Diniz was the worst) while Dorival had the best .
-While Dunga is not included - he last coached about 7.5 years ago - his win percentage is at a solid 63.27, making him the top compared to all coaches below, but with one caveat: he only coached a total of 147 games, majority of which were for the NT. Needless to say, the comparison is not fair.
-*Speaking of which, you can almost apply a similar logic to Zico, who coached much fewer games than all other coaches on this list below, including Diniz who coaches more than double that of Zico, despite being being 21 years younger. The other knock against Zico is that he has never coached in Brazil, and most of his work has been done in Asia, with some brief stints in eastern Europe from 2006-2009. Not to mention, he last coached almost 10 yeas ago. Nonetheless, I still included his name gives his reputation and the respect he garners, although given his comparative smaller number of games coached, I only listed his stats and didn't nominate him for any wins even if his stats topped that category (e.g win percentage)

My conclusion

While some of these numbers are clearly objective, some will look at them and make their own subjective analysis and conclusion. For example, if you compare Tite to Dorival, one thing is clear: while Tite has the better defensive record (no one argued this during his tenure) , Dorival has the slight upper hand in offence, at least based on the number of goals scored. And to think about it, in two straight world cups, Brazil had issues with scoring: in 2018, they managed 8 goals in 5 games. In 2022? exact same numbers: 8 goals in 5 games. Needless to say, the team needs a coach who will get better production out of his players, but hopefully not at the expense of the defensive effort. For that alone, and assuming we are not getting Ancelotti, Mourinho or other foreign coaches, I probably don't mind trying Dorival Junior!

Dorival Junior, 61 year old and current coach of Sao Paulo, is the new coach for Brazil.

Coach Dorival Júnior while at São Paulo

For those of you who have followed him, he is the coach whom Neymar got fired for an altercation when the former was the Santos coach back in 2010.

Ironically and 14 years later, the coach may be able to get his karma back by not calling Neymar to the NT. And that decision is made easier given Neymar's injury and relative older age (he will be 32 in Feb, and almost 33 by the time he is fully healthy towards end of this year)

As per the comparison table below, while Tite has slightly better winning record (51.19 vs. 49.89) as well as better defensive record (goals conceded) Dorival actually has the better offensive record (1.64 GPG vs. 1.58).

I am generally optimistic he can ride the ship, after the disastrous last 12 months under Ramon/Diniz.
