Iraq beat Qatar 2-1 in the 3rd place match of the Asia Under-23 tournament. As a result, Iraq secured a place in this summer's Olympics in Rio, Brazil. This will be Iraq's first soccer Olympic appearance since Athens 2004 and 5th all-time (Moscow 1980, Los Angeles 1984, Seoul 1988, Athens 2004)

By the way, in 2004 Iraq reached the semi-final and lost to Italy in the bronze medal game. I still remember their game beating Portugal and making 19 year old Cristiano Ronaldo cry!

Japan and South Korea (both already qualified to the Olympics as well) play in the final tomorrow.

It will be interesting to see if the Olympic team will have any Assyrians in its roster. The senior team does in Justin Meram from the MLS.

Even though I'm not a big supporter of Iraq (I'm indifferent towards it), I do feel content when they progress in soccer for some reason. Now that there are Assyrian players it's the icing on the top.

Assyrians have played a large role in Iraqi athletics. It would be a downright shame for there not to be at least one.
