I need to know if anyone knows how to renounce their Iraqi citizenship. I tried to contact the Iraqi Embassy and they didn't make much sense in what they told me. Also the suggestion of my birth certificate (which is the baptism certificate from the Assyrian Church) not being good enough, and a trip with my father and I to Iraq to obtain a new one is way out of the question.

Reason I need this is due to the security level of the job I'm going to be doing with the Marine Corps. If anyone has any info please let me know either by replying or instant messaging me.

Thank you......

From what i understand once you become an american citizen you are no longer iraqi. unless you apply for a dual citizenship.

I think Maria's right....woa, did I just type that? :bangin:

Well Rum you can somewhat breath easy........

When you get your US citizenship, the US does not recognize any sort of dual citizenship.................BUT, your country will still recognize you as a citizen. Thus, the need for me to renounce it. I found some info on the topic searching the depths of the internet, but it is to general and basically states it is done through the countries Embassy. So, I'm kind of at a stand still when they don't make sense. The lady who helped with my citizenship is looking into it. I was just wondering if anyone has dealt with this or done it themselves.[/b]

Just tell them Saddam refuses to sign the paperwork :ROFLMAO:

Honestly I have no clue, I'm sorry. Do you speak Arabic? If not, or not fluently, maybe have someone else call the Embassy for you? Maybe they will have a better chance of getting through / understanding.

Dude i'm telling you since i got my citizenship not too long ago, you are no longer an iraqi citizen(cuz my entire family is from iraq).
You are an American Citizen why are you even bothering with the iraq stuff you're wasting your time.

Trust me if I didn't have it, I wouldn't be making a big deal. The U.S. does not recognize any dual citizenship.............However your country still will recognize you. Alot of mexicans I know that were born in the U.S. due to the laws of Mexico are still Mexican citizens. You still hold an Iraqi citizenship in the eyes of Iraqi goverment.

"1. Voluntary Loss of Citizenship: Most countries have laws which specify how a person may renounce citizenship. Precise information on renouncing foreign nationality may be obtained from the foreign country's embassy or consulate. In most cases, the person can do all the necessary paperwork through the embassy. However, in certain cases the person must return to the home country to complete the renunciation process.

There are some countries, however, where voluntary renunciation may be difficult or even dangerous. Persons will have to make a decision based upon their judgement of the risks. The Department of State may be of assistance concerning information, but is not a primary source for information."
