I just got back from Syria...

Hi everyone,

I arrived from Syria (Western Assyria) last night at 6pm feeling very tired and worn out. It was one heck of a trip. Spent the entire month visiting as many possible places as I could. It was a lot of fun.

What I saw was far different than what I had expected though. There was a lot of positives (more than I expected). There were also many negatives (which I had anticipated). All in all, its a real upsetting state of affairs right now for Syrians throughout Syria especially if they do not work for the government.

I'll write a report on this within the week to give you a clearer understanding of my findings.

And your family is correct in their comments lol...but dont fret, I'm not married or even considering someone. I went to two weddings. The first was a guy from Australia and the second a guy from Chicago. Both weddings, the girls were eying my brother and I and were flirting with us. After asking a few questions, found out they were interested mainly because they knew we were from Canada.

Whenever we went places, the families would bring their daughters with them. One family kept coming over with their daughter. I think it was at least a good 2 weeks of seeing these people. The dad would kiss me and praise me all the time as would their mother. It got quite disturbing  :blink: But khina whats to be expected?

whats even more sad is seeing some assyrian guys living in the west, taking advantage of the situation and going to syria to pick and choose the best they want, becuase for them, love is not important but what is important is importing a wife whom they can control and bring as a maide rathar than be forced to go for a westernised & educated assyrian woman whom they can not compete with

EXACTLY!  My in-laws are from Syria and they comment on this a lot.  They said it was humiliating to see some arrogant jerk come from the west and pick one of their best girls whom they would later find out was treated more like a maid than a wife. 

As to the refugee crisis, according to my mother-in-law who is here visting us now, it's beyond bad.  The massive influx of Iraqis has resulted in rising costs; the country was not exactly overflowing with resources or jobs as it was and the addition of hundreds of thousands of people within a short amount of time has exasperated everyone.  Add to that (and I hate to say this) the fact that some of our Assyrians, God love 'em, are never satisfied with anything and it seems like the Syrians are becoming increasingly resentful.  Our people in Syria are doing their best to help with their limited resources only to hear complaints in return.  Not all of course, so don't attack please!  But enough that it's causing some friction.

Riza, glad you made it home safely aziza.  I'm so looking forward to your report -- don't make us wait too long!  As to the girls, I bet they were beautiful -- malookh?!  Lat razee yanee?!  :bangin:

Yes I did hear about that child. Remarkable. Unfortunately we didn't have time to go see him. We heard two days before we had to be in Sham to fly back.
