Pregnancy Pact Alarms Officials at U.S. High School

A pregnancy pact may be responsible for a dramatic rise in young mothers-to-be at a Massachusetts high school, Time magazine reports.

Seventeen girls at the 1,200-student Gloucester High School had positive pregnancy tests, more than four times the rate the previous year, the magazine said in a story published online Wednesday.

On Thursday, the local newspaper, Gloucester Daily Times, reported the number had risen to 18.

Principal Joseph Sullivan told the news weekly that nearly half the pregnant teens, all age 16 or younger, confessed to making a pact to get pregnant and raise their babies together.  :bangin:

Officials at the school in Gloucester, a city about 50 kilometres north of Boston, began looking into the rise in teen mothers after an unusually high number of girls began getting pregnancy tests at the school clinic.

"Some girls seemed more upset when they weren't pregnant than when they were," said Sullivan.

He also told the magazine that one of the fathers is a 24-year-old homeless man.

Time magazine reporter Kathleen Kingsbury, who wrote the story, said the seaside city has experienced a lot of economic hardship and seems to have many young people without direction.

"They didn't have anyone really instructing them on how to create a life plan," she told CBC Newsworld by telephone.

"Some of them decided that this was going to be their life plan, that they were going to be mothers, and by being mothers, they would be someone."

Some have also blamed Hollywood for glamourizing pregnancy with movies such as Juno and Knocked Up, plus Nickelodeon star Jamie Lynn Spears becoming a mother this week at age 17.

Recently released U.S. statistics show Gloucester High School may not be alone in dealing with a rise in student pregnancies, with the 2006 numbers documenting the first nationwide increase in the teen birth rate in 15 years.

The U.S. has traditionally had the highest teen birth rate of all developed countries.

In Canada, the teen birth rate has fallen dramatically during the past two decades, with the latest available figures, for 2004, showing 13.6 births for every 1,000 teen females compared to the U.S. rate of 41.1, Statistics Canada says.

Wow, what a bunch of losers. What the heck is the rush of having a kid and ruining your life as well as wasting my tax dollars cause they want to get knocked up!!!!

omg and i cant believe some would get upset if they were not pregnant...and one of them is a 24 year old homless father...omg poor babies will come into this world not knowing what is going on... :(

I am just replying as would a typical 16 year old girl, who would sympathize with these idiots

"that is so cute, it is their life, please don't judge them"

ASHOOR

I know so many girls from my highschool, younger then me are having kids, they are so proud that they are having babies...of course i'd be proud too but i am married they are not. some of them are talking about how they are getting them a brand name stroller and this and that....lol

Ay qotma

When i was in highschool i had a freind who was 15 years old , and she became pragnant , i asked her one time why she was so in rush and the answer was

I WANT TO BE A MOM

i was shocked lol i said you need a mom to take care of you not that you wanna have a baby to take care of

Let me get this straight...they actually planned and executed this plan to its end?  That's pretty impressive for a bunch of 15 year old girls.  I don't know if I have that kind of focus.

It doesn't take that long you know :ROFLMAO:

I'm just trying to wrap my head around what these idiots were thinking (ok, obviously they weren't.)  Just wait for those 3 a.m. feedings, having to miss the prom, and having no real social life in general.  I just hope their parents are involved somehow, I worry that at least a few of those girls are going to dispose of those babies once they learn how tough it is.  Losers.

Well, they don't have to keep the babies.

Man, my high school was boring.  The most interesting thing was that girl going to jail for trying to kill her dad with her boyfriend.  Oh no wait, that was junior high school....never mind.  High school was boring.

I doubt they will abort them when they went through so much trouble to get knocked up.  Once they arrive though, that's when I'd be concerned for the safety of the babies.  If not for their physical well-being, then for being raised by fools.

The best thing my Jr. High did was implement a Sex Education class.  This despite heavy opposition from religious groups.  To this day I remember that class and how valuable it was.  It wasn't a "how to" class.  I remember clearly that pregnancy was a major focus and the best thing they did was bring in three teenage mothers who told of their experience and how tough parenthood is.  No going out with all their friends, no dances, no more school at all for one of them.  It had a BIG impact.

correction: pregnant sheep...

Well, possessing that kind of a mentality you can only refer to these girls as 'kids." And kids having kids......very sick. They don't understand it's NOT a 'Baby Born Doll' they will be dealing with.

They are only children! This is pathetic! I just want to know...where are the parents? Why do they not interact with their children? Why do they not, DISIPLINE their children? They have seen too many movies, where girlfriends get pregnant together, and have cocktails and margareitas and go to lamas classes! Society is becoming twisted by the second!
