Just recently updated for 2016, among the countries whose ranking have deteriorated the most is Yemen at 158, due to the raging civil war there.
The beautiful Syria is now ranked 163 out of 162,it's that bad. Iraq 161 with South Sudan coming in at 162.
My own country, the USA is still at 103.

So the US is in the likes of China, South Africa, Brazil, Papua New Guinea and some other African countries (who have lower standard of life and more discrimination)?

And Australia is as peaceful as Madagscar, Angola and a couple of other African countries (for the reason above)?

Yep.
In the 80s and 90s the US was even worse actually. We're basically the bottom of the first world.

So unfortunate, because we are no more peaceful than third world countries like Indonesia, Tanzania, Mozambique, Madagascar, Namibia and Botswana. Lol.

Not sure what algorithms they used, but Australia is one of the most peaceful countries out there. These countries that share our "shade" have a much higher account of sexism, homophobia, racism. They're pretty much unlivable. There are barely anti-discrimination laws in their system. Kinda idiotic that they lumped us with them. Heck, even America ain't that bad, considering how liberal its becoming now.

It's not counting how "liberal" or whatever the country is. It's just looking at violence and the results of it.
The criteria are available on the site itself.

If you're talking about violence, these African countries are much more ferocious than Australia and even the US (murder rate):

Indonesia surprisingly isn't violent. And as is Saudi Arabia. But it's not really surprising considering their inhumane capital punishment. Murderers would be afraid to kill people there.

The homicide rate isn't everything. Not to mention Australia ranks higher than all of the countries in Africa.
Here's some of the criteria:

Perceptions of criminality
Security officers & police
Homicide
Incarceration
Access to weapons
Intensity of internal conflict
Violent demonstrations
Violent crime
Political instability
Political terror
Weapons imports
Terrorism impact
Deaths from internal conflict

I know that all these points are the criteria for the Global Peace Index. But a high homicide rate is still a red flag, so I don't see how they didn't put that in mind before continuing their procedure. Not to mention, these countries are not only very homicidal, but also have political instability, people accessing weapons and violent crime. But then they somehow still share the same shade as AUS. As if we have day-to-day access to weapons, high homicide rate and political disequilibrium.

Anyway, I'm not the first to make criticism on these standard of living (or best/worst cities to live in) type of maps anyway. Their creators always have to hastily bungle them. They shouldn't be taken for granted. Not that I'm attacking you for posting it.
