Flamengo Club of Brazil vs Iraq

When I tell people that I have met the Greats Zico & Soccrates in person, they think I am Crazy!

This actually happened back in 1986, when Club Flamengo came to Baghdad and Played a Friendly Against Iraq who was preparing for the WC of 86 in Mexico.

I was helping my Uncle who used to work as a Camera Man in those days and was lucky to meet some of Flamengo players after the Game! Here are some highlights of that Game!

Take a look at who the first goal scorer was. Aziza d'Bebeto.

That Flamengo team was one of the greatest club sides assembled. Their squad in 1987 was made up of players who had representyed Brazil in the 1982, 1986 World Cups as well as players who would end up playing in 1990 and 1994 and 1998. I only recently found out that Socrates even played there as he made his name with Corinthians but he was there for only 1 season I believe.

I envy you for being able to watch such a match with their real team. I remember when AC Milan played against Australia in 1993. None of the 3 famous Dutch players came out. And when Manchester United played against Australia in 1999, the head line was "Devils in Disguise" as several of their real players were not even there.

How Ironic, I didn't even notice Bebeto, he must have been 17 or 18 back then.

Socrates was part of that team that toured Baghdad. They were such a big team... they Trashed Iraq twice, 3-1 & 2-0. IF they played the same squad in the world cup 86, they might have won it.

Not just Bebeto (who was 23 at the time) but Jorginho also appears in the clip. A player who looked like Zinho appears as well. I know Zinho and Leonardo (USA94 and France98) played for Flamengo in 1987 but not sure if they were in this squad that went to Iraq and when they joined Flamengo.

WOW that is so cool ED, didn't even know or remember reading about Flamengo coming to Iraq to play the NT. To think about it, both teams were at their peak or in one of their best periods at the time.
