This is unprecedented! For the first time in decades, Iraq's national team squad for the upcoming Gulf Cup in Kuwait, will feature 3 Assyrians:

  • Rebin Sulaka (32 Years): Born in Arbil-Iraq, Rebin has been a regular with the NT for over 2 years now and is in fact one of the best and most solid players on the team. I had no idea, but did you know he is 6.4" tall?

  • Lucas Shlimon (21 Years) : Born in Sweden, he is new to the team and has only played with them a few games.

  • Peter Gwargis (24 Years) : Born in Sydney, Australia, he actually grew up in Sweden, and plays for Iraqi club Dohuk.

Peter Gwargis is a Gun... He has a Future in a major European league. I hope Cassas gives him enough time on the Field and not play him for 5 minutes like he has done with other Pro-players.

Is Peter Giwargis the guy who played for Brighton in England? There was a Sydney born Assyrian who grew up in Sweden a few years ago and I didn't hear much about him after he signed for Brighton's youth team. There were rumours that he wanted to play for Australia and that Aaron Mooy and Matt Ryan (Brighton Socceroos at the time) had been in his ear to do so, but you don't know which rumours are ever true. I just can't remember his name but it may have been Peter Giwargis.

As for Lucas Shlimon, he also has an Aussie connection. His father Admon Shlimon is an old friend of mine and was a Rabi Nimrod Scholarship holder amongst other things. He left Australia years ago (though still comes to visit Sydney) to live in Sweden.

Yes, that is him indeed. He was meant to play for Australia, but the Coach snubbed him and didn't want to know about him, so he chose Iraq.
