DVD Review: The Visitor

I had wanted to see this film for a while and I'm happy it didn't disappoint.  Richard Jenkins is one of those character actors that you see in so many movies but can never remember his name, even though he is superbly talented.  He is excellent in this role as a widowed college professor in Connecticut who quietly prods through his lonely life.  Until he returns to his New York apartment after months away to discover a Syrian musician and his Senegalese girlfriend are now living there.  The three form a bond and the young couple bring new life to the old professor.

This is a very touching, captivating film.  The only negative I would give it was the role of the the Syrian's mother.  Though played very well, it seemed to me to be very unrealistic.  No mother, let alone a traditional widowed Arab one, would go out to dinner and a broadway show with a man she just met while her son is locked up in a detention facility possibly awaiting deportation.

Overall, a 8.5/10
