Who's your celebrity lookalike?

Maybe so I can picture you as them from now on (to the faceless users in here). Lol

Yeah Lol I can't see a lookalike. Or maybe your pic isn't clear enough - are your eyes light? They look grey/hazel.

Well, I look like "Nisreen Tafesh" (Syrian Actress) in the 90's with her younger face and older style. The below pictures are the pictures where I really resemble her.

I see the resemblance, especially in the 2nd picture. Judging from your pic here, you also kinda like Rose McGowan (if you're familiar with her?).

Oh yeah, how old are you?

Yes, I did get some people telling me I have the same googly eyes that Rose McGown and Alyssa Milano have. Nisreen looks different now and her style has changed but, if she did stick to the "typical Syrian makeup" (how most syrian girls put their makeup as shown by the pictures) then we will still look alike.

I'm 21 and you?

Lol they're not googly eyes. They're normal large eyes. After all, big eyes are suited for women (don't most models tend to have large eyes?).

I'm 23. Are you in the US?

No, I'm in the UAE. I was in the UK last year, I did my undergraduate degree over there.  :) what about you?

No. It's not true usually, the royal family, their relatives, the ones who work for them and successful businessmen are the filthy rich ones. If you work in Abu Dhabi (Capital city) then the salaries are amazing for both natives and non natives in the public sector. If you work in other cities, then the public sector pays so little compared to Abu Dhabi even in Dubai (Dubai is still better than where I come from which is Ras Al-Khaimah) for instance, a doctor in a public hospital in Abu dhabi can be paid 50k aed and in ras al khaimah can be paid 10k aed. However, private sectors in Dubai are very good, especially, if you work for a good financial company or for a successful businessman or you're a successful businessman yourself. The private sector can be corrupt though for instance, you can be solely accepted for having good social connections i.e. you have a friend working there or one of your relatives, which is why I dislike it.

I think the benefits of living here would be healthcare and education which probably "takes off some burden on us". For instance, we can get a scholarship from the ministry of higher education to study anywhere after high school, if we get certain grades starting from grade 7. It applies to both natives and non natives (living in the UAE for 5+ years) but, it's highly competitive.  They cover the tuition fees, one ticket to that foreign country and back (if you're abroad) and they give you a salary every month to pay for you accommodation fees and other basic needs (It's enough to cover them,  it's not loads of money that we can roll in ).

Overall, I think most of us are middle class - we do earn fair money to live on, enjoy and to save a little for the future.

P.S: Don't believe what you see on TV or social media i.e. lamborghinis and whatever, it's not true..it's a very rare sight! unless you go to a posh place.  :cool2:

P.S: UAE is a federal monarchy so we have 7 royal families and an FNC (2-3 from the population gets elected from each city to represent it), the royal family in my city aren't even as rich as extremely successful businessmen in Dubai.  They're OK and they even go to school with us  :)

Interesting. We're also a middle class, the most of us, here in AUS.

How do you know so much English though? You were raised in England or been there for a long time?

In public schools, we study in Arabic but, we get taught English starting from grade 1 and from grade 3 to 8 we pick any other language alongside English.  The most popular choices are French and Spanish. For non-natives studying in a public school, they can pick to study their native tongue from grade 1 too, usually, Farsi, Malayalam (Indian language) and Hindi since they're a lot of persians and indians here.  When we enter high school, we can also choose to sit for exams based on other curriculum say, British (IGCSEs and AS/A-level) or American (SATs and APs) or Indian for Indians (CBSE) but we have to pay extra money to sit the exams.

In private schools, arabic is taught as a language from an early stage to the arabic speaking students whilst the basics of arabic are taught from grade 1 to 5 for non-arabic speaking students. The schools could be: American, British, Indian, Iranian and Australian and the students are taught based on the aforementioned curricula. They could be very good and very bad but they're very expensive, so one needs to pick a reputable one with good reviews from parents.  :).

I speak and write 5 languages. I went to the UK when I was 16 and came back when I was 20  :blush2:

I'm not an Assyrian, i'm a native to the UAE. We have Assyrian churches belonging to the Jacobites (Indians following the Church of the East), Syriac orthodox and catholic assyrian church of the east. I'm not sure about orthodox Assyrian and chaldean churches :) Those churches aren't abundant though, probably found in the capital city or Dubai except the Jacobite one (practically in every city).

So how did you find this site and what made you join?

My sister does humanitarian work and she was based in Jordanian Camps last year. She met Iraqis from all religions and ethnicities and when she came she told me stories about how Assyrians still exist etc. So, I researched and learnt many things about you guys including, persecution, linguistics, culture and such. :) I found the site and joined because I'm really intrigued to hear the "assyrian voice"  :)
