I know I am a year late but I am just here to express my joy for Brazil winning the latest Copa America which they hosted last year.

Even better? Messi failing once again to win a title for Argentina haha...

If you are keeping count, this is Messi’s 5th Copa America (2007,2011,2015,2016,2019) . Add to that 4 World Cups that he has played in and is yet to win a single one: 2006,2010,2014,2018. He will likely feature as a 35 year old in the 2022 WC and assuming he doesn’t win it, it will be 10 international tournaments with no titles!

I know this is about Copa America but continuing with the topic of Messi, even worse than not winning a single title in 9 attempts with Argentina? Not having scored a single goal in a WC elimination game. That is absolutely shocking for a player some put in the GOAT discussion!

For the reason you have outlined, I will never regard Messi in the same way as Ronaldo, Maradona, Pele, etc. Unlike Maradona's mediocre Argentina team of 1986, Messi always played for a strong Argentina team. Yet Maradona won a World Cup Final, playing for a rubbish team. This is what made Maradona one of the greatest. In a team sport, he won a World Cup on his own. Messi with many great Argie team mates cannot even win a Copa America.

while I do consider Messi arguably the greatest soccer player of all time, he shouldn’t be put in the discussion of GOAT, alongside players like Maradona, Pele and Ronaldo who did it both with the NT and club.

And yes, I have said the same thing to my friends : Messi has played with some very good Argentine teams, unlike Maradona whose only teammate I remember are Claudio Caniggia, Jorge Burruchaga and the amazing 1990 goalie Sergio Goycochea.
