Sorry for messing up the thread.  lol

I get heated when uninformed people take low-blows at the American  Government.

Racist laws?  Sounds like your problem is with the laws, not Tancredo.  As an elected official, Tancredo has sworn an oath to uphold the laws of the land.  I wish more would stand by that oath as Tancredo has.

And by the way, he doesn't "blame foreigners" for anything.  He blames ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS for violating the laws of our country.

Yes I have a problem with bad laws and with those that uphold them.  Upholding a racist law that mainly targets one group of people and that can split families, sending parents out of the country and leaving children behind, is not something to be congratulated or admired.  Just because it is law doesn't make it right.  We've had plenty of bad laws in our history and the people we look fondly upon in history are those that fought to abolish them.  Not the stalwart assh*les who've tried to maintain them.

I think Ben Bernanke holds more influence than Obama does, and he is.........    Moving along, congratulations Mr Obama, you are set for life now.  People said you were "sacrificing" future earnings by leaving your previous job, but in truth, you'll be President for 8 years and receive a pension greater than all of our salaries combined for the rest of your life - I take my hat off.

I'm not sure why but there are dots in your sentence where the word Jewish should appear.  By the way, in case you were uninformed about how our system works, Bernanke and the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve are all  appointments of the President and must be confirmed by the Senate.  They serve 14 year terms and usually overlap Presidents.  They are not more influential than policy set by the Executive branch of government, unless you just meant that he's more powerful because he runs the International Conspiracy of Jew Money Lenders?

By more influential I mean that he has the final say on US monetary policy, which has more far-reaching and global implications than tax policy, health, and other things a president is responsible for (bar invading countries and starting wars).

While the fed does operate independently of the other parts of government there is constant Congressional oversight and the Chairmen of the Fed meets regularly with the Secretary of the Treasury and the President in setting policy for money issues.  They all work together.  I still wouldn't classify him as more influential.

So let me clear this up:  Is everyone creaming their pants simply because a black person became president, or because they think has the sole power to save America and the whole world simply by waving his hands?  I can accept both being dual reasons to celebrate, but not solely the former.

It is not simply because a black man was elected President. It is a combination of different factors. First and formost it is an end to eight long years of failed and ineffective policies based not on logic, truth or facts but merely on propoganda and whims. Barack Obama, if anything brings new hope to the American people. And hope has been a very important part of America as a nation throughout its historical narrative. The fact that a black man, the son of an immigrant (who was born a Muslim no less) is elected to the highest office of the world's sole superpower is a testament to America's ability to provide opportunity for all. But it is not just this. In terms of actual policies it means the end of policies being formed based on a dangerous far-right wing ideology and the reliance on religion so greatly in the political system. What this means is that the American president and Cabinet will now, instead of having their focus entirely on killing the 'evil-doers' will turn their attention to matters of economic justice, education, health-care reform and an end to 'Realist' political theory when it comes to strategic matters.

And these example are only the tip of the iceberg. The importance of individuals in American history is great and their ability to guide and shape the direction of a country is also vast. John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King and so many others roused this feeling in the American people (and what an impact they made!) ... Obama too stirs the same emotions. Any single failure of an Obama administration will not equal in the slightest the blight that the Bush Administration's failed policies were on America and on the world.

Would Obama have stopped the global financial crisis by regulating collateralised debt obligations?  Lah, I doubt that, so there goes 65%* of the world's problems that would not have been solved by Obama had he been around sooner.

All Obama is doing is riding the crest of the "Post-Bush Wave" a la our very own Mr Rudd riding the post-Howard wave (which is more of a trough nowadays however).  Times of "revolution" are over unfortunately - there isn't going to be any dramatic renaissance - just a customary transition from one political party to the next.  Implementing typical party-policies and adding some reforms here and there aren't something unique the world hasn't seen before.

*I may have made up some statistics

And so it begins

Obama Orders Closure of the Military Prison at Guantanamo Within a Year

President also moving to shut CIA's secret prisons.

As the new president moves into his second full day in office, a senior Obama administration official said Obama would sign the order to shutter the Guantanamo prison within one year. Critics of the lockup at a U.S. Navy base in Cuba say its use violates detainee rights.

The man tapped to oversee U.S. intelligence is promising Congress there will be no torture, harsh interrogations and warrantless wiretapping on his watch.

In comments prepared for his confirmation hearing, Retired Adm. Dennis Blair says the Guantanamo prison must be closed because it is "a damaging symbol to the world."

"Torture is not moral, legal or effective," he added.

Obama also was set to name a highly respected veteran politician to serve as special Mideast envoy, a step to make good on a campaign pledge to be more robustly involved in efforts to help with peace efforts in the volatile region.

Sources have said that the envoy will be George Mitchell, the former Senate Democratic leader.

Mitchell, 75, will return to a role he pursued during President Bill Clinton's presidency when the former senator took on several difficult diplomatic assignments, including chairing peace talks on Northern Ireland.

Mitchell also led an international commission to investigate violence in the Middle East. His report, issued in spring 2001, after Clinton had left office, called for a freeze on Israeli settlements on the West Bank and a Palestinian crackdown on terrorism.

Obama has vowed to move swiftly to meet challenges in the Middle East and other troubled overseas regions.

No it's because he will make the economy strong, help stop the war in Gaza and create peace in Iraq, all single handedly.

Only Hamas can stop the war in Gaza, and they wont!
they are still living in Salah Al-Deen Al-Ayyoby time, they want war, fight, blood and all that ( while the leaders are sitting at home and enjoying the life)

Jacob, you are a pretty intelligent guy so think this one through.  WHO is it that splits up those families?  Is it really the US government?  Or is it the very person who breaks our laws by coming in illegally, then has children here?  It's the person who decided to first break the law that's at fault.  Splitting up the family is THEIR fault and a result of THEIR decision.

Why is the notion of personal responsibility so foreign to our generation?
