Coherence -- good or bad?

How important is it to make sense?  Is communicating using basic language something that is still considered important?  When you speak, do people generally respond like this  or like this ?

Discuss.

This was inspired by a conversation with another AVNer *cough*waleeta*cough*

The question is pretty simple and self-explanatory.

Ok, perhaps I'm the one not making sense.

Do people have difficulty understanding you?  Are you able to string a couple of coherent sentences together?  If you can't, why not?

I think making sense is very important. How else are you going to understand any one or make people understand you?

Most of the time people understand what im trying to say. I do have my days where i talk to much and people get lost. I try to make my point by giving examples and all i do is confuse the people even more.

I can make talk good when wanted to be understood by the people who aren't all time understanding to me from what saying is coming from my mouth.

I think it's not only important to make sense and use the basic language, but also something that you need to survive in the real world. For instance, the American citizens, who don't use English as their native language, must survive in this country by using the English language. From going to school to working on a career, the language you use to communicate with people is a must.

People cannot know everything in this world, so we can always learn and appreciate from certain people, who know more about particular subjects that we do. Personally, when I bring a subject that doesn't concern to my friends, they will say like "w_t_f?" At the same time, when my friends talk about politics (for instance), then I'll use that same response lol. So I guess there's a difference of understanding between the language you are using or the certain topics we bring up into the conversations.

It is important to make sense, but sometimes its just as important, if not more, to not make sense. Logic can only take us so far, and its also dreadfully boring.

To quote Dostoevsky:

'I agree that two and two make four is an excellent thing; but to give everything its due, two and two make five is also a very fine thing'.

Sounds like a certain AVNer who talks as if raised by Tarzan.

"Me like this photo.  Photo good."

We're not all privileged ma'am.

Ok, so now we're getting somewhere.  Does your socio-economic background factor in to how one speaks?  Yes, children of privilege attend better schools, that goes without saying.  But it's not like those from disadvantged backgrounds never learn how to communicate properly.

The ice is cracking under your feet. Careful :)

Um, yeah, there are more factors involved, besides the fact that they are privileged or raised by 'Tarazan'.

But I would hardly draw a conclusion from a chatting forum.

Meh, it's a pet peeve and grates on my last nerve, so I honestly don't care if people read between the lines. Next thing you know I'll be called an "elitist."

Sometimes the people who are living in poor areas of a city have their own way of communicating. They use alot of slang or make up words to describe certain things. People who aren't from that naibourhood maybe never understand what they say. So yes the environment around you may have some influence in the way you communicate.

Just look at what something like msn has done, we don’t always spell the full word and talk in “chat mode”. When I read how my little sister chats with her friends I could never understand because they change words around and have different names for everything.

Thanks cuttie, you seem to get where I'm going with this.  I'm not putting down anyone who doesn't speak the Queen's English.  It's that we've all gotten so used to speaking "in real life" as if we are still in "chat mode."  There doesn't seem to be an "on" or "off" switch.  And even if we are chatting here and using slang, which of course we all do, there is something to be said for expressing yourself in a way that doesn't make you sound cartoonish.

Hey, I speak really fast, so it's not like I'm in any position to judge.  Just certain people's style (Jacob got it down perfectly  :giggle:) seems to grate on me and I needed to vent.
