Toronto's newest professional franchise is looking for a name.

The city's Major League Soccer team, scheduled to begin play in 2007, is asking fans for their input on what the team should be called.

Among the suggestions put forth by Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, who will own and operate the franchise, are Toronto Nationals, Inter Toronto FC, Toronto Reds, Toronto FC and Toronto Northmen FC.

"We've spent the last six months researching, and speaking to soccer fans, community soccer teams and soccer's leading governing bodies including Major League Soccer, in our search for the right team name," said Tom Anselmi, executive vice-president and chief operating officer at MLSE.

"We've narrowed down a long list of potential franchise names to five, which we believe captures soccer's global appeal, while at the same time, recognizing the team's Canadian ties."

A website has been set up, www.torontoprosoccer.com, to allow fans to vote on those names or submit one of their own. The deadline to vote for the new team name is April 30.

The team's new 20,000 seat stadium is currently under construction at Exhibition Place, located along Toronto's lakefront. The facility will be ready in time to play host to the FIFA Under-20 World Cup Championship in July 2007.

I voted on Toronto FC. Sounds right. Others were suggestion FC Toronto. But its too cheesy. I espically dont like Inter Toronto FC thats just retarded...lol Have fun!

THIS IS AWESOME!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

an MLS soccer team in toronto....fucking right!

those are some pretty bad names...so i'll just go with toronto FC...only one that's half decent.

FC after or before a name is too generic for a soccer team.  How about an eye catching name like Toronto Terrorists?

Or something less intimidating, but powerful like Toronto Tigers (assuming there are no other sporting teams with this name).

Whatever name you come up with, I am sure it will sound better than San Jose Earthquakes or Chicago Fire or Los Angeles Galaxy.

If we name it after an animal it would either be Moose, Beaver, or Loon/Geese.

Toronto Tigers is still a terrorist name (Tamil Tigers) and they're large here in Toronto, so thats out of the picture. I think having a "European" style name is great for Toronto. It will help attract the relatively large Italian, Greek communities to the games. By sporting the FC it gives it that European flavour.

You may be right.  The MLS team names copped a lot of criticism when they first started so I guess Toronto would want to sound like a real team.

Ok, I have been converted.  FC Toronto is my pick too.

how about....Toronto Maple Leafs FC after all, the stadium is owned by Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment which owns:

Toronto Maple Leafs
Toronto Raptors
Toronto Rock
Air Canada Centre
Maple Leaf Condos
Richo Centre (I think)
Toronto Marlies
Maple Leaf TVl
Raptor's TV

I think it works......

I am not sure of the rules in Canada but in Australia, there was controvercy when a soccer team and an Aussie Rules team wanted to both use the name Brisbane Lions.  In the end, the soccer team became the Queensland Roar.

Can two Maple Leaf teams exist?
