Archbishop Severius Hawa of the Syrian Orthodox Church of Baghdad called for the establishment of a self administrative region for the Assyrian people in the Nineveh plains in northern Iraq (South Assyria)
Assyria Council of Europe together with the Christian Democrats organized a conference on June 11th 2008 at the European Parliament in Brussels to highlight the suffering of the Assyrian people in Iraq. The European Parliament was asked to pay more attention to this suffering people in Iraq.
Several politicians participated, among them the ambassador of Iraq, at this conference under the name: Assyrians in Iraq
