Don't think many, if any of you, has read or seen this interview: it is one we did with Assyrian singer Tony Gabriel, back in 2005!

Back then, though still known here in Canada, he was still an emerging star and people outside of Canada hadn't heard much of him or had a chance to hear him in person.

10 years later, Tony Gabriel has become a household name in Assyrian music, and is now known beyond Canada and the US.

I stumbled on this interview while searching for something in the website. Proud to have been the first website to interview him when he was just getting started and becoming famous.

"How do you see Assyrian music? is it going forward or backward?
-Honestly, it hasn't changed, it is still the same. Some of our people are hard to please, as they are not willing nor are they ready to modernize our music; simply take it to the next level.  Sometimes they look at me in a weird way when I come up with something new, that we have never tried before.  As long as we have this resistance to change and modernization (while still maintaining the rules of Assyrian music) our music won't go forward.
"

He's so right here. Assyrians dread change. My dad performs, although he isn't a "certified" singer. I tried to play him a distinct piano melody that I created for him to sing to, but he was like "this sounds too different and foreign". He then went and sang his piece with a melody that sounds strikingly similar to Sargon Gabriel's sad songs. -_-
