Assyrian man held in Syrian jail for 20 years....only now do we know!

As many of you may have heard already, there has been an Assyrian man from Lebanon who has been held in a Syrian jail for 20 years now. Only now are we finding this information out. Nobody had mentioned anything about it.

The Assyrian Democratic Organization is working feverishly to free this man from jail. I'm not sure what his crime was, but under Hafiz Al-Assad, the same dude that locked up my dad and a few other ADO members, strongly opposed opposition to his Ba'ath party. Its safe to assume he was arrested for political reasons or something very small like no papers or something retarded.

In any case, please please PLEASE! Sign the petition below. I'm sorry, but the petition is in Arabic and I dont speak it or read it so I can't translate for you. Help your Assyrians through out the world. This incident is also being reported to the Assyrian Human Rights Watch lead by the Council of Assyrian Research and Development which is based in Canada. I also would not doubt it if ADO brought this matter up to the Kurdish Syrian conference in Washington, DC on March 13th as a human rights violation which Syria has committed.

OK I figured out the story.

This man was in Beiruit and didn't return to Syria for military service. When you refuse military service, you're automatically jailed and punished. Its a serious offence over there. Haffez Al-Assad issued a statement saying he would pardon any expatriots that have not compleated military service.

With a clear mind and heart, he said he'd go back to Syria and then join the army. Sure enough, he came home and a few days later, the "Mokhabarat" or Secret Police, came and took him and his brother away.

His parents looked everywhere for him, but assumed he was missing or dead. Which is why this was never brought to the attention of the ADO or any other Assyrian community.

Recently, the brother of this man was released and went back home. He told everyone where his brother was and that they've been there and tortured for all those years. His own father did not recognize neither of his sons.

Unfortunatly for us here on AVN, issues like these are secondary to the court case of Mar Bawi and Mar Dinkha. Lets get this man free and lets talk about something that truely is a serious violation of human rights. There is a letter currently being drafted which would hit all heads of state that have serious influence in Middle Eastern affairs (i.e Britain, US, European Union) and also to Syria's ministers and Canada's (who have already had to deal with Syria's torture jails with one of our own Canadian men).

Lets help free this man and bring him home!

P.S.? You've mentioned your involvement with ADO -- just wondering if you know one of its active members, Abgar Malool?
