....

True, but on the other hand, people in the west can relate to "Iraqi Christians" a LOT more than they can relate to an ethnic group most have never heard of (i.e. Assyrian). It works out

Actually, I think the main reason for this is because there's Assyrians who call themselves Chaldean, Suryoyo, etc so the Media got frustrated of trying to differentiate us and decided to just lump up together as "Iraqi Christians".

Hey if nukhrayeh have to give us a name to unite us all let it be lol.

But there's a problem with "Iraqi Christians" as a name.....

1. It implies that we are strictly from Iraq.
2. It implies that we are either Arab or Kurdish and that we simply follow Christianity with no other major difference.

First, Suryoyo is synonymous with Assyrians, All Suryoye (Syriacs/Assyrians/Arameans nationalists) use that name since at least more than 2000 years, it's in the name of our church and it has never change ????? ??????? ????? ?????. For our part, We never used Othuroye like we use Suryoye. Othuroye is relatively new and its usage is very limited even among Suryoye Assyrians nationalists.

Secondly, from my personal point of view, I think it's due to the catholic church and or Greek Orthodox/catholic church (in Syria) that most media refer to us as Christians, Iraqi Christians, Syrians Christians.
Most of Iraq's Christians are Chaldean church followers, and the Catholic church deny completely our ethnicity and our nation  (or at least just see us as christians).
You just have to read ankawa's articles where 90% of there bishops, priests use iraqi christians.
It's the same for Melkites/Greeks Orthodoxs, they're the majority in Syria, there church don't care, they're now just arabs so in the case of syria they are refered to Syria's Christians.

Lol...I assure you, there are no Assyrian Buddhists in Iraq....I'm 99.9% sure of this. There are 'closet' Atheists though, but Assyrian Buddhists, Hindus in Iraq? Highly unlikely. And don't worry, I'm an Assyrian Atheist myself (glad you're another and glad people in here are not finding it to be a problem as Assyrians usually treat Atheism as bad as Islam).

But yes, they should be calling us Assyrians. No wonder people don't know us. It's us to blame anyway - We are holding signs saying "save Iraqi Christians". Seriously? We are forgetting our own name OURSELVES. Don't blame the media really. They're the ones seeing us holding those posters that have no mentioning of 'Assyrian'.

And yes, like what mrzurnaci said, 'Iraqi Christians' makes us think of Arab Christians. And not to mention, Arab Muslims there have been killed too. They were probably the most targeted (Arabs) since they're the most populated in Mosul (Assyrians are mostly in Duhok and Arbil).
