Assyrian Chatters Interviews
By the Assyrian Voice Network

Name: SATANTA
Date: August 10th, 2002

Hello and welcome to our website:
first of all we would like you to introduce yourself:

PERSONAL QUESTIONS

-Name:
Diana Haroon

-Nickname:
SATANTA

-sex/age/location:
Female, 19 (almost 20 ;)), Toronto.

-What do you do in life, interests, and hobbies?
I attend York University, and currently work at Holt Renfrew (not many people know what that store is). Interests, let’s see…………I don’t do much, but I like clubbing, playing pool, watching movies, rollerblading, SHOPPING, and taking long walks on the beach (haha, I was joking about the last one).

-What do you consider yourself first: good looking, smart, nice?
I consider myself nice, smart and then good looking. Having a good attitude gets you somewhere, so does being intelligent. I am not a superficial person, therefore, I don’t believe good looks mean anything. After all, looks are only there for a little bit.

-What are your educational and career goals?
Currently, I am a student attending York University in Toronto. I hope (and pray) to be a Criminal lawyer.

-Have you found love in your life yet?
No, I have not found the love of my life yet. *wink*wink*

"Do not forget where we came from, and who are ancestors are. I just hope that 20 years from now, Assyrian will be spoken fluently by youth"

-If you are just ready for marriage, what age would you do this at?
I am not going to get married until I am 35, and find myself a sexy old old man with money. (I am joking, RELAX.) I do not think there is an deal age for anybody to get married at. If, and when a couple is ready they should get married. However, I do think that finishing school would be a good idea.

CHAT QUESTIONS

-How long have you been on our website and the internet in general?
AHHHHH…A LONG LONG TIME. I have had the net for approximately five-six years and ever since then, I have been chatting. I’ve seen Ninveh, Atour and every other Assyrian chat shut down (thank God this is still running, keep up the good work Ashoor). I have been on this site ever since it was launched.

-What do you think about the new transition from the message board to the text chat and sometimes even back to the voice chat? any reasons for that?
First of all, I only visit the Message Board and Text Chat. I no longer find the Voice Chat appealing, due to the hyperactive children that have killed that place (I’m trying to be nice here). I shift between these two places, because I have a low attention span and moving around helps me from hitting my head on the walls, hehehe.

-In what period have you made the most friends online? was it back in the voice chat days, or these days in message board and text chat and even MSN.
When I first started to come online, I made many new friends, but have lost contact with many of them. Although, I still do make new friends every now and then. Nowadays, most people do know “SATANTA”, and don’t really “approach” me in the chats, because I tend to pick on many of them (hehe, sorry, I get bored, but I love all you guys).

-what comes to your mind when you first hear these three nicknames:
ASUK, ChaldeanChic, BLUEICE
ASUK: A guy in UK who I may meet at the convention (if I go)
ChaldeanChic: a girl on the Message Board, she may be from Windsor (not too sure)
BLUEICE: ICEY!! ahhhhhh, mah “baybeee”, hehe I love my lil’homie from chi-town

-ICQ or MSN and why?
Well, I use to be an ICQ freak, but then people stopped using ICQ. Due to the fact that I am a sheep, I migrated and conformed with the majority, and now I sleep, eat and drink MSN. (sorry Ashoor :P)

-When you see a new guy in the chat what do you say to him first: "Hi how are you" or "Hi where from"?
Well, considering the fact that I have been taught proper manners, I would ask how a person is before asking where they reside.

-First person that you met on the chat?
Wow, I can’t remember very well (I’m getting old). I can tell you who some my friend’s were back in the day (I know you all care). They were: Claudia, BOOMER, HiWoNe, Biryani, RENIA, MARROUSH and God knows who else.

-What is better: Voice chat, Text chat, Visual chat, message board?
Like I said before, I do not enjoy Voice Chat, and Visual Chat was somewhat cool, because you could pick your own little icon. I like the Message Board, and Text chat equally, no discrimination there. The Message Board is getting dry (I guess it’s dry because school is out, and not many people are on their computers), but I try to add some life in it by causing some intense arguments.

ASSYRIANS RELATED QUESTIONS

-Do you think Assyrians are doing any good job of preserving our language, traditions and rights in general in the Middle East specially Northern Iraq?
I do not know much about what is going on in the Middle East and Northern Iraq, so I don’t want to speak with no facts. In North American, Assyrians are trying to preserve our language and traditions, by having parties, picnics and other activities. Yet we are still set apart. In Toronto alone, we have approximately four or five Assyrian associations that work against each other, rather then together as a whole. It makes me sick. Rather then bringing Assyrians together, they are splitting us up. As for rights, we don’t have any rights for being a minority group. We don’t have many high-ranking politicians or any other people willing to “give us our rights”, whatever they maybe.

-What do you personally think is the best thing Assyrians can do to get their rights or at least some of them? Any plans or ways to achieve this?
By speaking up and actually getting together. Without having people speak up, and have an army of Assyrians behind him or her how will anybody know who we are and what our right are?

-If you had to give the Assyrian youth an advice, what would it be?
I urge the Assyrian youth of today to preserve our great language, and heritage. Most of us live in North America, and have been assimilated into the North American culture and have forgotten our great history (actually, many don’t even know anything about our history, which is even more sad).

-Is it important to speak 100% Assyrian at home?
YES! It is very important to speak 100% Assyrian at home. If we stop speaking our mother tongue at home, will we speak it to our “Canadian” friends? I also think it is very important to speak Assyrian to our Assyrian friends as well.

-How do you feel when thinking "I am from a nation which dominated the world once, developed a lot of the sciences we have today, has my language spoken by Jesus, and a civilization extending for more than six thousands years?" how proud does that make you?
It makes me very proud. Unfortunately, not too many people know who the Great Assyrians were, that is why I try to educate them.

-Would you date a non-Assyrian guy? why or why not?
I would rather date Assyrian men, but if the chance came up and I clicked with a non-Assyrian man, I would go out with him. I prefer to marry an Assyrian male anyways.

-Last word to all people out there and how they can serve our nation even better?
Do not forget where we came from, and who are ancestors are. I just hope that 20 years from now, Assyrian will be spoken fluently by youth.

General and Miscellaneous Questions

-What is your horoscope and what is your best matching horoscope?
I am a Scorpion and my best matches are Cancer, Virgo, Capricorn, or Pisces. (best matches courtesy of Yahoo.com, hehe)

-Where do you spend most of your time online?
MSN

-Why is your nickname SATANTA?
LOL. Ever since I was a kid, my mother would call me a SATANTA, so it just stuck with me. In addition, people tend to tell me I got a mind of a devil and a heart of an angel, go figure.

-What do you think of picnics in Toronto?
Well, I think they are kind of fun. This year I have only attend the first picnic where Linda George sang. I’ve noticed that Assyrian picnics have become meat shops, and I’ve heard girl’s cloths are getting shorter and tighter as Sunday’s go by. (I will be expecting a fight or two due to this comment.)

-Do you beleive in the idea of: love from the first sight, or love on the internet?
Love at first site and love on the internet doesn’t exist. There is more to love then physical attraction, and talking to a person on the net. You can’t base all your love only on some features of a person like looks or personality, you need to love the whole package.

When you see a person for the first time, most claim they have fallen in love with him or her, in reality, you are only infatuated with the person’s appearance. Looks are not the only the thing a person has to offer. Somebody of the opposite sex may look “hot”, and be the most shallow, vain and ignorant person on the face of the earth. Don’t get me wrong, there should be physical attraction, but a relationship should not be based on the physical part only.

Now, to love on the internet. I know many people that have gotten married or will be in the future because they met their soul mate on the net. I have heard that it is very hard to keep long distance relationships, and I believe it. Talking to somebody on the internet is very different then talking to the same person in real life. You are sitting behind a screen and there are not many emotions involved. But then again, having long distance relationships really tests the strength of a relationship, so I don’t know. LOL.

-What do you think of the following figures?
Ajhiqar the Wise, Ronaldo, Wayne Gretsky

I don’t know who “Ajhiqar the Wise” is, but I do know who Ronaldo and Gretzky are. Both Ronaldo and Gretzky are phenomenal sports figures whom have had their image heightened by the media. They pose as role models for many people, and inspire children who want to be like them. I thank the media. Without that tool, they would be nowhere. They score a goal, and they get a million dollar endorsements.

Getting to know the fellow chatters.

Keep up the good work Ashoor. Thank you for sending  interviewing me. =)
