Scholars Urge Armenia to Officially Recognize Assyrian Genocide
« on: February 20, 2012, 09:11:28 PM »
The Assyrian Genocide Research Center (Seyfo), based in Sweden, has sent a letter to Serzh A. Sargsyan, the President of the Republic of Armenia, urging Armenia to officially recognize the Assyrian genocide, which occurred simultaneously with the Armenian Genocide. Assyrians, Armenians and Greeks were all victims of genocide between 1914 and 1923, a campaign which aimed, and succeeded, in cleansing the Ottoman Empire of most of it's Christian subjects. Nearly three million Assyrians, Armenains and Greeks were killed during that period.

The letter was signed by 36 organizations and 22 scholars. Here's is the text of the letter.

it is amazing that Armenia-despite being the other victim of this genocide with Assyrians and the Greeks-still hasn't officially recognized the Assyrian genocide. Like what are they waiting for? anyone knows?

It's the same genocide. There is no "Armenian" genocide or "Assyrian" genocide or "Greek" genocide; all these people were targeted by the same group at the same time in the same place.

Some people argue that the "Jewish" genocide was somehow separate from the "Gypsy" genocide or the "Slavic" genocide or the "communist" genocide. Really, they're all one genocide: the Holocaust. Again: same group, same time, same place. Sure, certain groups suffered more than others, but the other groups shouldn't be forgotten or played down.

If it is the same, then why would scholars urge them to recognize our Assyrian genocide? I am sure they already recognize their own Armenian genocide and if that is the case, then they recognize ours as well.

There are a couple of differences between them as far as I've read. Ours was kept way more quiet than the Armenian one where as much as possible was done to make that one known to the world and with us they murdered us in our villages while the Armenians were mostly murdered in long death marches. Those aren't "real" differences though.

But officially they're still counted as three different genocides. When Sweden recognized it they wrote that they recognize the Assyrian/Syriac/Chaldean Genocide, the Armenian Genocide, and the Pontiac Greek Genocide. All three separately. So if you read that one country recognizes the Armenian Genocide don't automatically assume they recognize ours as well. Armenia do not recognize our genocide officially.

Armenians have been like this for a while unfortunately. They really don't acknowledge our genocide in different events/situations willingly. But looks like their people think they should recognize it. At least according to a couple of comments in this article: http://www.panarmenian.net/eng/news/94726/

But we're used to being in the shadow aren't we? We shouldn't even have to write them a letter.

YEREVAN. – Armenian opposition Heritage Party’s parliamentary faction introduced a bill, and it motioned the Government to condemn the genocide committed in the Ottoman Empire against the Pontus Greeks, Assyrians, and other nations. In addition, the faction proposed that May 19 be declared remembrance day in Armenia.

And the Government of Armenia on Thursday publicized its conclusion with respect to this bill. So, according to the Government, the expression “the genocide of other nations” is vague, and it can give rise to doubts and misunderstandings. The Government will give its conclusion solely after when this matter is clarified.
