How hard is Assyrian to learn?
« on: August 16, 2016, 02:11:17 AM »
I am somewhat familiar with Arabic grammar, so that's what I'm going on.
I know 1.Arabic grammar is insane and complex 2. Syriac, all things considered, is fairly similar to Arabic
Is Syriac a difficult language to learn?

If you are familiar with both English and Arabic grammar and consonants, it won't be hard to learn.

You can learn spoken Syriac independent of written Syriac however, learning the written form may assist in understanding the spoken form in some cases.

Regardless of whether you chose to learn only the spoken form or not, you should learn the Assyrian "alphabet" first and also ensure you can pronounce all of the vowels and consonants.

I know Mrzurnaci has an alphabet chart that you can use as a point of reference to remember the characters.

Presuming you want to learn modern eastern Assyrian, message me for assistance and know that I have a young YouTube channel which teaches it: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9oheKdfhoKflZ6p34VDSPA

If you want to learn Classical Syriac then I'm sure somebody else here will know where to direct you.

Classical Arabic grammar is indeed very hard.

Classical Syriac grammar is relatively similar to Classical Arabic, but Syriac is a lot simpler almost all of the time.

The Neo-Aramaic dialects are even simpler than Classical Syriac in terms of grammar, in my opinion.

It all depends on 1) how much time and effort you put into learning, and 2) what you know already. Someone who speaks English or other European languages might have a harder time adjusting to a Semitic language, but if you know one of those Semitic languages already, then learning another is a lot easier.

Writing and reading Assyrian is easier than I thought. It's even more simpler than speaking the language.

I prefer the Madnkhaya version of the Syriac script though. I'd also start with that.

I have it saved in my pictures folder.

Since you like advertising your diagram everywhere, why not upload it to Wikipedia in the Syriac script page? It's your work, they won't get you.

Well, that's one way for to people to see it.

Wikipedia won't be a bad alternative.

But, your choice.

upload it to wikipedia if you want, I don't really "own" it because it's a diagram on an alphabet for a language. I only "own" how it was visually put together.

I would really want to, but I cannot risk it as I've been suspended once for uploading copyrighted content (from Google images). I lied and told them that I personally took these pictures (they were Assyrian events), and they didn't buy it. Lol....

Your diagram is found all over Google images and it has a name on it. They would hold that against me by telling me that it's not my work and that it's somebody else's image from the internet. Even if I tell them that I created it. They're stubborn, unforgiving asses. :/

Okay, just becareful. They can easily find the multiple copies of that image on the internet and say that you "stole" it from there. But you have never been banned before, so they could be lenient on you and they might believe you.

Alright, use it wherever you'd like in Wikipedia itself.

Wait, you haven't added the diagram in one of the Assyrian/Syriac pages?

I would want to do this, but they might suspect me of being a sockpuppet of your account. -_-
