How Assyrians become singers?
« on: July 26, 2011, 12:05:57 AM »
Does anyone here know how Assyrians become singers? I don't think they write their own lyrics (most of the time, because I know Janan Sawa does), I don't think they produce their own music, and we do not have record companies in Hollywood LOL. So how do they find people to make their songs? I'd really be interested in singing and music so I would love to know if anyone here has any connections or information. I know some start by singing at parties and stuff, but I am only 17 and my parents don't like that.

I am not a musician or singer but have some idea how they do it.

Most start either as a hobby or by singing at parties. It is usually one of these two. Then they either get lucky and meet with other talented musicians or writers and start producing their own songs/albums etc. Or, they are just musically talented, so they start writing and making their own music (think Linda George, Ashur Sargis etc.)

Once you do your first album and sing in a few parties, that is it, you are pretty much set.

You seem to have a good interest and passion for this, which are good qualifiers for a singer. I encourage you to explore it.

Look at this singer from Iraq, Alek Jan. he is in his early 20s, but he started early, singing at his family functions, getting his own tamboora and trying to immitate Assyrian legends. Listen to him now, his voice is amazing and his tamboora skills are also great (which is why I like to refer to him as a hybrid of Sargon Gabriel + Albert Rouel in one)!

Here is another one of his songs:
Assyrian singer: Alek Jan

well not his song, but he sings it great. the idea is, you may start singing others' songs, and after, you start doing your own if people like your performance.

I like producing music but I am not advanced enough to try a real Assyrian instrumental. I am good with American pop and r&b and I can make Assyrian khigga, shekhani...etc beats but not with the zurna and all the special instruments. I would like to be a singer someday and I think I can start out if I keep working on my music but I am too young to sing at parties.

R&B Instrumental

This is the closest I've gotten to an Arabic sounding instrumental though:

Middle Eastern music takes a lot more time, effort, and RARE instruments. I can't find a Zurna for my Music Producing program anywhere.

find some cultural brothers who can jam a few songs with you. Play the classics that everyone wants to hear at their wedding. And play for family and friends parties.

People talk. Simple as that my friend. Once you get the word out, charge money to perform and most musicians especially assyrian record at home.

Just get an old 80s keyboard and sample it all like mad!  :loool:

When late Albert Ruel was asked, what advice would you give to our new singers? He said

“I wish them all the success, I have one request. If they want to leave a print on the Assyrian music filed, first they have to make sure they have a qualified singing voice, then to work very hard on their songs before releasing them, they have to be honest with themselves and with their audience. They have to target the heart and Soul of the Assyrian audience before their ears”.

Linda George started in church. So you don't always have to be at parties.

Nowadays, they're starting in YouTube. Like Bubkey.
