Which language was spoken in Assyria before Akkadian?
« on: November 01, 2008, 08:31:25 AM »
Hey, does anyone of you guys know which language was mostly spoken in Assyria before the Akkadian came to power and spread their language over Mesopotamia?

Akkadian is divided into several varieties based on geography and historical period:[2]

    * Old Akkadian, 2500–1950 BC
    * Old Babylonian/Old Assyrian, 1950–1530 BC
    * Middle Babylonian/Middle Assyrian, 1530–1000 BC
    * Neo-Babylonian/Neo-Assyrian, 1000–600 BC

    * Late Babylonian, 600 BC–100 AD

Assyrians are mostly potrayed as Semetic people, but as we know you cant not make a Nation only by the language they speak. So if someone does have good history references to which language was spoken before the akkadian one in Assyria it would be nice if you could share.

As for the Sumerian language as I can read it was mostly used just in southern Mesopotamia, if someone knows more about it jsut feel free to explain.

thanks in advantage.

Well as far as I know our ancostros werent only Akkadians, since Assyria was made up by diffrent ethnics beeing ammorits, hurrians, akkadians and probably few others.

History

6000 BCE: First settlements of Nineveh.

2500 BCE: Ashur is inhabited for the first time.

Yeah who was inhabiting Nineveh then i.e. the Nineveh Plains. Which brings me back to my question which language was spoken before the Akkadians arrived to Assyria.

History
Around 6500 BCE: First traces of agriculture in this region.

3rd millennium: Immigration of Semitic nomads, whose language becomes the leading one in the region.
— Strong influence from the Sumerian civilization in southern Mesopotamia.

Around 2300: Assyria is part of the Sumer-Akkadian empire.

Around 2000: Heavy immigration of the Amorites, a Semitic people.

I would probably say Hurrian, but no one knows for sure.

Hurrians hmm, didnt they arrived somewhen mid 3 century to Mesopotamia?...

.....in most parts the Hurrians made up only a minority of the population. A Hurrian population majority existed only in the Khabur River Valley and in the kingdom of Arrapha.

The Hurrians were a people of the Ancient Near East, who lived in northern Mesopotamia and areas to the immediate east and west, beginning approximately 2500 BC.

2500 BCE: Ashur is inhabited for the first time.

Old Akkadian, 2500–1950 BC

Around 2300: Assyria is part of the Sumer-Akkadian empire.

Sumerian would've been a likely language.
