What is the Most Common Assyrian Letter?
« on: April 21, 2010, 09:12:35 AM »
What is the Most Common Assyrian Letter?

For example, in English it is the letter E.
In Greek, and this is a no brainer, it is the letter S

What about in Assyrian? or does it depend on the dialect?

Is it the 'KH'(kheth)? or is the the 'Sh' (sheen)?

That is, letters that occur most frequently in words.

I would guess on, A - Alep, but we dont say it in all words since its silent, by we write it in most words...

Supplement: In the Western Assyrian dialect, O is the most used...

I'm with dave, alaph comes very frequently (though it's mostly silent). Other than that, taw comes pretty frequently since it's in most feminine nouns and in all second person verbs. "KH" is written with two letters (one of which was an original "deep H" like Arabic ﺡ) in a lot of dialects, but the Western and Chaldean dialects still have the original pronunciation for one of the letters so they have less of "KH" and more of "H." "SH" doesn't even come close, I think.

Ashoor, for english I always thought the letter "S" is most common letter lol
it is all depends on the dialect, for example for people that never heard our language they would think the sound of "KH" is more common letter that we use, and Eastern is the sound of "O", and the Chaldean dialect is the "7" which is the "KH" without a dot lol

That is just my opinion  :blush2:

In some dialects (such as the Urmian influenced ones), the "ch" sound is the most common sound (I believe that it's represented by a Kap with some sort of an accent). At times it's such an overkill. Hahaha....

But yes, alap is definitely the most common letter, if you mean to include the "ah" sound. We have a lot of "ah's" in Assyrian.
