Popular Assyrian Family Names!
« on: December 29, 2005, 09:42:24 PM »
The most popular Indian family names are, yes you guessed it:

Patel, Singh and Gupta.

There may be others, but at least here in Canada.

Now I was thinking to myself, what are the most popular or well-known Assyrian family names?

Now these may just be names, and not necessairily a family by blood, but nontheless, they are connected somehow, even historically.

We have all heard of Alkass, a popular and big Assyrian family from the village of Koumaneh (Dere w Koumaneh), most of whom live in Canada and USA (Mostly Chicago) In fact one of my co-worker has the last name AlKass.

Al-Qasrany is another popular one, from the village of Dehe. I beleive we have some members here who are Qasrani.

There is also the Toma family, from the village of Asheitha. My mom is part of this family, and you can find 80% of this family in Modesto. Toma was a priest in Iraq from the late 1800's till mid 1950's or, and was arguably one of the best priests Assyrians ever had in the last century.  He had written up to 10 books in Assyrian, and knew the bible inside-out.

I also heard of the Canoun family in Chicago and other parts of Ontario, but not sure how connected are these Canouns.

Albazi of course (village of Baz), is another big one, one which we had a lot from here on the website since 1999. Now there is a difference: people who call themselvs Bazi, as in Baznaya only, and those who call themselvs after AlBazi, which is the name of a family.

I didn't include my own family, but I may later. We are so~so, not the most popular, but still manage good LOL. But in Iraq, we were one of the most populars.

Do you guys have any others?

"Neesan's put your lighters up"  :shades:

its not really a 'family name'.... you guys have to realize how they used to name familes back then... sure there were 'core' families...but mostly it was the name of your grandfather or father... and they also used the term 'Malik' to signify what family you were from I believe...

its funny b/c I told my dad that his name would be carried on (as long as there are men in the bloodline) and will not be changed ... lucky him :P
