Will you be giving your children Assyrian names?
« on: May 04, 2005, 10:39:35 PM »
I think this topic came up sometime last year but hey I'll put it up again seeing that there's many new members around.

Many of us have grew up most of our lives outside of Beth Nahrain, and some of us already don't have Assyrian names.  How many of you will be naming your children Assyrian names?  Are you going to assimulate into the society you reside in and give them a name that is common in your surroundings?  Or are you going to keep up with your heritage and keep on naming them Assyrian?

Maybe people with non-Assyrian names will get an oumtanayeh feel and get back to it?  lol.

I'm not sure. I'd love to name my kids assyrian names, but it's not ONLY the mother's choice, so we'll see.

But again, just cause we name our kids after our culture, doesn't mean they'll grow up to be like that. All the "Ninos"'s i know are corrupt. So layethekh.

Hahaha, I agree with the part that there are too many of some Assyrian names. One time at a Janan Sawa party for AAS, my dad called out "Ashuriena" and about 15-20 women turned around. It was weird.

About the variety part, well, we have a great variety, but the problem is, a great deal of us are just familiar with the popular ones, like Ninos, Sargon, Ashur, Ramsen, Ashuriena, Nahrain, Sargina, Ninweh, Shamiram, etc. so we don't really use the other wonderful ones, like Narsai, Ashurbella, etc. as commonly.

lets take the michael jackson way and name them blanket

i dont want assyrian names, unless i find a unique one.

ashur, nenos, ashuriena, blah blah. too commonly used.

might as well call ur son qahba and ur daughter qahbaiena  :bangin:

so who knows. if i find a wicked assyrian uncommonly used name, i'd probably name them that

My favorite Assyrian name has to be Ashurbella. I love that name. No one uses it though! Akh, I'm going to name all my kids Ashurbella, even if they're guys. Hahahaha. :p

i definately want assyrian names, but unique ones....

for the boys id name them after our kings:

tiglath-pileser(diqlat)

shalmanesar

shamshi-adad

adad-nirari

sennacerib-pronounced "senkhareeb" or "sankho"

ashurbanipal-maybe not cos thats abbreviated to ashoor, so maybe "banipal"?

girls, i dont know many queens(lol) but:

semiramis(shamiram)-not very unique so maybe not

batishwa-my sisters name...i think its beautiful and unique..very assyrian

majdoline/majdo(pronounced "mashdoleen")-another beautiful name(my mums name lol)-magdalena in english

maghdlayta-how we say magdalene in assyrian

cant think of more......

but to those that are embarrased to name assyrian names or to those people that wud laugh at ur kids.....to hell with ignorance.....why let other ppl determine wat ur gonna call ur kids? thats pathetic......ur kids will grow up to love their name......im glad im called younan and not so many people turn around.....its awesome and unique... :-)

Good on you man.  I have a good friend named Younan and once in a while I'll poke fun by calling him yona (pigeon).  lol

Guys, there are tons and tons of Assyrian names out there.  We're just too accustomed to hearing the typical king/queen names.  I bet most of your grandparents and great grandparents have old school Assyrian names that you never hear nowadays.  But when you hear them now you're all like ew that sounds so retarded.  We're just too used to hearing English/Latin like names everywhere (people residing in English states).

Check out this link for Assyrian names, there's many names still missing from it but it still has tons of names.

I used to say I'd never give my kids Assyrian names, because of the whole teasing and mispronouncing thing. But really, I love the blessing of my name. I don't honestly think it's pretty, come on, we have to admit that some names roll of the tongue a little more beautifully than others, but it's also unique to THIS country. Maybe if we had a little Assyria, Shamirum wouldn't be so different, but for most of the places I go, I'm the only one around (haha, remember, I have to be plastered to attend Assyrian functions). Anyway, I learned a long time ago that my name is a combination of Assyrian words, "shimee" (my name) and "rama" (tall, or really, noble). So my name literally means, "My name is royal," I guess it's fitting of the greatest (and only, lol) Assyrian queen.

So, I have this GREAT Assyrian name I made up on my own, and it actually means something interesting, but I am so never ever going to tell you because I don't want to walk into church one day and see you baptizing YOUR baby with it, haha!  :giggle:

not at all gilbert...this is one of the many things which identify us as assyrians.......english ppl give their kids english names, italians give italian names, greek give greek names etc....so why cant we give assyrian names? how cud ppl be ashamed of their culture liek that? i dont get it? :(

i truly believe(in most cases), if u give ur kids an assyrian name, then most, at one point will question why their name is different/unique to their friends(i.e non-english ppl lol), and thats wen they'll find out/research wat it means and this will give them pride in being assyrian and wanting to know other things about who they are and our rich heritage.....

its atleast a stepping stone, a kick start for a new born into our assyrian culture by starting with the names...lol were trying to guard them from foreign hands hehe!  :-)

1. once the kids earn "that" pride, they will become arrogant and blind. atleast most of them, just look around at our assyrians these days

2. all nakhrayeh have the same kind of names. their all "english" names. even the italians, greeks, etc

Keep in mind that names like Senhareb, Esarhadon, Shalmaneser, and so on are not one name, but 2 or 3 names put together as a title name, here's some nice unique Meopotamian names for you:

Nirari
Ninor
Enlil
Belu
Adad
Marduk
Amel

i dont think theres many ppl with assyrian kings names...liek ive never heard of any1 called "shalmanesar" or shamshi-adad?

wats ur take on this topic since u began it?

I haven't heard of people with those names either.

I'm right now stuck between "I'm not sure" and "Yes."  If I don't name my children Assyrian names, they will for sure have Assyrian middle names.  They will get an Assyrian name one way or another.

Yea, I don't blame you, with a name like Gilbert, I'd be desparate to at least have a kid with a cool name!  :lmao:

;) Before you totally hate me forever and ever and ever, lol, I'm just kidding!!! Although I do actually like some of the names Birko posted, and I have some cousins with those names, too! I'm telling you man, there are cool Assyrian names out there, you can find two words you like, put them together, and make a great name. But if you're going for Gilbert, Jr., then rock on dude
